Pinellas Park, FL - Better than Average, But Not Great 3 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 22, 2012) I lived in Pinellas Park, Florida for 10 years and at first I found this to be a delightful city to live in. It still has many fine attributes. Many aspects of the city are beautiful with palm tree lined streets and parks that are well cared for.

The city is close to the Gulf o
...Read More f Mexico where the beaches sparkle and to the gateway to Tampa. There is plenty of good shopping in the surrounding areas and the good restaurants are plentiful. Of course, seafood is a specialty of the area but there are some good steak houses nearby.

The population of the city is currently estimated to be 47,217 with 56 percent under the age of 40 years old and 26 percent over the age of 60 years old. The median household income is $43,109 while the median income for all of Florida is $49,795 and the median national income is $63,644. The cost of living index for Pinellas Park is 91.25 on the national scale of 100.

The median house price in the city is $132,000 which is 34 percent below the Florida average median value. Property taxes are low; less than $1,000 on the home priced at $132,000. Housing prices have not been stable since 2005 and it is unlikely that the area will see any price appreciation for several years.

I really enjoyed the proximity to the wonderful areas of Largo, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and all of the Gulf Coast beach cities and restaurants. The drive along Gulf Blvd. on the Gulf Coast is absolutely beautiful and it goes through some lovely small beach towns.

Crime is not as high as some areas in Florida but Pinellas Park has a higher crime rate than other nearby cities. However, there is a lot of self-protection that the residents can implement and in areas where a concentrated effort has been made crime is much lower. The police are glad to help with this program.

Overall city services are diminishing, but not to the level of threatening the safety of the residents. Good medical care is available at several nearby hospitals including the University Hospital in Tampa.

The one drawback to the area is the unusually high number of registered sex offenders and many do not register in Florida. The state has 56,000 sex offenders that have registered. However, this would not deter me from continuing to live there. I just realized that I preferred four seasons and a milder summer. Read Less
