South Mountain Phoenix - Great Place To Raise The Kids User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 20, 2012) I moved to South Mountain Phoenix, Arizona when I was about five. When you grow up somewhere and it is all you know, you love it there. It is home and no matter how hot or cold it is, you think it is great. Luckily I was only a kid and so I thought 110 degree weather was normal. ...Read More The heat starts in the early spring and lasts close to thanksgiving. My parents complained, but this sandy, dry community was home to me and my brothers and we loved it.

When we wanted to get out of the heat, we would go up to Flagstaff for the weekend. My Dad had gone to college there and missed the big trees and beautiful scenery. In the winter we went skiing at the Snow Bowl and I have lots of fond memories of those great days. I guess my Dad dreamed of me going to Northern Arizona University, but living eight though feet up and having all that snow in the winter is not something I wanted to experience. I stayed right in Phoenix area and went to Arizona State University. It is in the nearby town of Tempe and has a great business program.

Since housing is relatively inexpensive in the south mountain area and it is still possible to get a large lot or piece of land for a good price, I plan on raising my family in this part of the community. The schools are good and of course there is lots of shopping in downtown Phoenix. There are lots of churches and although I don't go myself, I hope my kids can enjoy some of the activities they offer.

I guess the desert just gets in your system. Cactus and sagebrush can be seen everywhere and there is no lack of sand. People are friendly in the state as a whole and everyone feels welcome in this laid back area. So if anyone loves beautiful sunsets, lots of room and a certain cowboy feeling, this is the place to come. I should know, after all, I am home grown and I am not going anywhere because this is a great place for people of all ages. I am going to kick back and enjoy some sunshine and be glad that my parents raised me in South Mountain. Read Less
