From birth, until now; I've lived my entire life in Philadelphia. With the lifestyle my parents were living (not exactly the best, but not the worst), we ended up bouncing from one neighborhood to the next. University City, North Philly, South Philly, Logan, Olney, West Oaklane, ...Read More
and etc. I love it in this city, but there's one place in particular that stuck out to me the most: Wynnefield in West Philadelphia. Why is that, you wonder? Well, it's because it's not the best of neighborhoods. There's the occasional gun violence (it's not as bad as it used to be), muggings, break-ins, and burglaries. I want to say "you'll get used to it," but the thing is, you probably wont.
"You liar! I live in West Philadelphia, and it's nothing like that!" Is what I here from quite a few people, who haven't lived here for more than 3 years. Yes, the entire area isn't horrible. Really, the area isn't a cesspool, for the most depraved people in the city. In fact, there're patches of area that are extremely pleasant! Places like University City area that's being completely rebuilt, and reformed; places that're on southwest side of market street that'll leave you wondering if you're still in the same city; and, places like Upper-Overbrook that hasn't ever really changed from the fantastic neighborhood, it has always been.
The city is making pretty great strides in their development of the area. They completely rebuilt West Philadelphia H.S, Created High School of the Future, creating a new childrens hospital, and I've even heard a few rumors of some condos going up, within the year. I'm sure if the area is given the amount of attention it needs, it'll eventually be among the top neighborhoods in Philadelphia! In the meantime, however, it's nowhere near above average. Overall, it's not the greatest place to live, in Philadelphia; it's not too safe, but the area is improving with development in several areas.
