The neighborhood is a generally quiet, small suburb located directly West of Philly, populated mostly by young families and students who attend the nearby University of Pennsylvania. The positives of liv ...Read More ing in Cobbs Creek, Philadelphia PA include the proximity to Center City, Philly, the sense of community and the abundant public transportation. However, there are quite a few negative aspects of life in Cobbs Creek as well.

Cobbs Creek is a popular neighborhood primarily due to its location. It is only a 5 minute drive to the main University of Pennsylvania campus, which includes the nearest library and a world-class hospital. It is also quite close to downtown, Center City Philadelphia, a neighborhood that is hip, affluent, safe and boasts an incredible array of restaurants and interesting attractions.

Another positive to living in Cobbs Creek is the proliferation of public transportation options close by. Not only is there more than 5 different bus stops within walking distance of the neighborhood, but the SEPTA bullet-trams run through the neighborhood too, making a commute to work a quick and easy affair.

The residents of Cobbs Creek are primarily African-American, with some Caucasians mixed into the community. Thus, the sense of community in the neighborhood is strong, with homeowners meetings happening regularly at area churches.

Unfortunately, there are more negatives than positives when it comes to life in Cobbs Creek, Philadelphia PA. First off, the crime rate is more than 5% higher than the average rate for Philly, which is already almost double the national average. It is not uncommon to witness petty thefts and burglary just walking down the dirty, unkempt streets, especially at night. Second, the nightlife in Cobbs Creek is almost non-existent, with just a couple of dive bars and exotic clubs in the area. Restaurants in the area are mostly small, family owned ethnic food joints, but there are only a few decent options. My personal favorite is Duke's Jerk Pit, a small place that does serve up some delicious roasted meat. Similar to the restaurant and nightlife scene, the shopping market in Cobbs Creek is small and uninteresting. Most places are strip-mall chain stores, and the vast majority of consumers simply travel out of the area to go shopping.

Honestly speaking, living in Cobbs Creek is rewarding in that the rents are low and the area is very close to popular area of Philadelphia. Still, the negatives far outweigh the positives in my mind. Read Less
