Omaha is pretty darn good 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 11, 2018) You get what you get. Like. You live in Nebraska. For the cost of living and the amount of fancy pants companies that are here? Worst place I have ever lived! I can't wait to be able to relocate!!! 0.5 rating By Peggy68154 ( Feb 15, 2015) I hate Omaha! It is the most unfriendly place I have ever been. The Hidden Jewel of the Midwest 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Dec 19, 2014) I have lived in Omaha for the past 5 years and have come to love this city. Omaha is truly a jewel in the rough. It is the type of Midwest town that brings the small-town feel with all of the big city amenities. Warren Buffet calls Omaha home as well living in his original home h ...Read More e bought before he was a billionaire.

I live in Omaha near the downtown which provides amazing access to the nightlife, restaurants, and the expanding art scene. Having relocated from Minneapolis, I have found Omaha to have everything the Twin Cities have but with a much more Mayberry feel (for those who liked the Andy Griffith Show). One thing I have noticed is that most people are easy going and crime is almost non-existent. It is really an amazing place to raise a family or find that special someone. You really can't go wrong with any of the local bars in the area and can often find the owners dinning alongside you. This community feel is what really makes the downtown special.

Having relocated from the Twin Cities I really thought that I would miss out on the professional sports. Omaha is home to a few very fun minor league teams from baseball to hockey. The tickets are cheap and the games are quite honestly a lot more enjoyable to watch. I never thought that Omaha would be where I call home, but I never plan on leaving this city. From the low unemployment rate to the amazing nightlife; Omaha has it all. If you're looking for a fun place to visit and get a sense of what small-town America really feels like then visit Omaha. Omaha: The Big City that Doesn't Feel Too Big 4 rating By Anonymous ( Nov 25, 2011) I lived in Omaha, Nebraska for about 3 years, while I was going to college. I really enjoyed my time there, though I'm not sure I'd want to live there forever. Omaha is a good size city but it's not so huge that I ever felt overwhelmed or overcrowded. Living downtown was great, I ...Read More was only a short walk from the Old Market area where there are several cobble-stoned blocks full of great restaurants and unique shops. The Dundee Dell was a personal favorite, for its trademark fish and chips and because it has the world's largest selection of scotch. Because it's not a huge metropolis, Omaha's downtown doesn't feel touristy at all, but I never got bored living there either.

Around the downtown area, my friends and I would often go to shows at the Slowdown, a music venue near the baseball stadium. Since Omaha's one of the only large cities in the area, a lot of great, big-name bands make a stop there on their tour. One of the city's greatest traditions is the annual College Baseball World Series, when the whole town shows up at the stadium, as well as fans from all over the US. But the wonderful thing about Omaha is that it is so cheap to live there! It's got the big city feel without the hiked-up prices for apartments or events. After college, I was ready to move on and see more diverse parts of the country, but for a college student or for families, Omaha is a great place to live. Read Less
Omaha, Nebraska: A Surprisingly Great City! 4 rating By Anonymous ( Apr 30, 2010) My in-laws have lived in Omaha, Nebraska for the past five years, so I have made quite a few trips to see them. I'll admit, I was not too thrilled to be traveling there, as the idea of Omaha didn't seem too exciting. However, it turns out that Omaha actually has some really great ...Read More things to offer and some wonderful attractions to see.

The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is an exceptional zoo, with an indoor swamp, indoor rainforest, and indoor desert area underneath a huge dome. The Omaha Children's Museum is also a fun place to take the kids, especially on a cold winter day, in which Omaha has its share! Another cool place is the Old Market, a fabulous area with unique Omaha restaurants, shopping and more.

My advice if you are going to Omaha is to stay away during the College World Series, as the city becomes very packed at that time. Also, if you go in the winter, be prepared for cold, harsh winds, and the potential for lots of snow. Overall though, Omaha is a surprisingly great city to visit or live in! Read Less

Compare Omaha, NE Livability

      vs

      Omaha, NE

In addition to being home to one of the top zoos in the world, over 450,000 people call Omaha home thanks to its nice amenities and cheap home prices. As Nebraska's largest city, Omaha is also home to the Collegiate World Series where each summer, the top college baseball teams come to compete for the National Championship. Another interesting fact about the city that New Yorkers are sure to argue with is that the city is actually the original home of the Reuben. If that does not want to make you move to this prototypical Midwestern city, what else will?

As indicated earlier, homeowners are able to get a lot of home for their money when they shop in Omaha. The city is home to several universities, and it is also blessed with an amazing public school system that helps children achieve a lot from young ages. Foodies will fall in love with Omaha since it is at the leading edge of the farm to fork movement as fresh Nebraska fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy are incorporated into an ever-increasing number of dishes on menus throughout the city.

Whether you decide to settle in Elkhorn, the Old Market, Midtown Crossing, or Malcom X, Omaha is home to some eclectic areas that have a unique character and charm. Getting around town is not very difficult since traffic is not a major problem, although there can be some slowdowns during peak travel periods. Omaha Metro does offer public transportation options for citizens in the city, although the majority of people in Omaha typically commute via car.

If you are looking for things to do in Omaha other than the zoo or baseball, you are in luck. Lauritzen Gardens offers visitors a great selection of flowers that is unrivaled in the entire state. The Old Market is the place to travel to if you want to try some delicious culinary delights or engage in some quirky shopping. The Durham Museum is an old train station that has been converted into an exhibition hall that hosts a wonderful array of items.

Omaha is home to a large number of military personnel, and it is also the headquarters for the U.S. nuclear enterprise. As such, the United States Air Force is one of the city's largest employers. In addition to jobs in the defense sector, many people in the city work at TD Ameritrade, Lincoln Financial, and Cox Communications. The city has wages that are higher than many other cities in the state, and this helps contribute to a lifestyle that is pleasant for people who have lived here their entire life and those who have transplanted into the city from other states.
