Don’t live here. 1.5 rating By Isabel1281 ( Dec 16, 2017) In recent months I have gotten banging on my door in the morning with police men, and I must say for the most ridiculous reasons ever. For example my lawnmower had broken that week and I was working on buying one but it was to expenisive so for about a week and a half I had no ch ...Read More oice but to let my grass grow out, there was a newly moved in couple next door, and I must say they are sweet on the outside but sour on the inside. Police men come banging on my door and they explain that someone has called in about my grass being to tall. And if it wasn’t cut by a certain date I would get a ticket. Ridiculous. Another example, I have a cat and a dog, this example is a bit more understanding but still, extremely unnecessary. At about 9:30 AM I get loud banging on my door, and it is a police officer asking if my cat is home. I replied with yes and answered very weird questions, once he got to the point he said someone has called in and said that my cat was running around my house outside. I explained that he is an outdoor cat and he was extremely direspectful, telling me he needs a leash as if he was a vicious lion. Now the funny thing is, the person across from me, I’m not even exaggerating has about 7 cats, always outside. No collar. No tags. And me having one cat that sleeps most of the day, goes out for about 3 hours in the night gets two separate tickets both 50 dollars because I don’t have a license for my cat and he has no visible tags. For crying out loud, it’s a fragile cat. He could die from a bird pecking at his paw. I’m disappointed, there were 100 percent people who needed emergency help and they were arguing with me over a cat going outside to enjoy himself. I 100 percent understand the license but it’s unnecessary to give me no warning just a staight up ticket. All in all, police department is absolute crap, do their job sometimes, usually they cover the most stupid calls ever. Now onto neighbors, you will never get a friendly neighbor, their all snarky and rude, over protective over their lawn and bushes. And you just have to live with it. Kids & teenagers, many are very disrespectful, and not behaved. My point is, don’t live here, it’s way to pricey for what you have to deal with. Read Less
Don't move here 1.5 rating By ashleylynn ( Apr 20, 2013) My family has been in Oak Lawn my whole life and let me tell you...the traffic is terrible, the village harasses you over EVERY little thing (ie. where you park your car in your own driveway, any simple projects you want to do to your house - you need a permit for everything), th ...Read More e police are rude and disrespectful (they'd give you a ticket for breathing if they could), the kids/teenagers here are terribly misbehaved and disrespectful, vandalism is not uncommon, the cost of living is relatively high, and taxes here in CROOK COUNTY are awful. The ridiculous taxes are the worst thing about Oak Lawn. Also, Oak Lawn is far too close to many not so great neighborhoods. If you are thinking about moving, I would advise moving farther away from Chicago and to stay out of crook county (cook county). The weather is also not pleasant. The only good thing about Oak Lawn is the library. Oak Lawn Library is very nice. Read Less
Best suited for families 3.5 rating By tlgacek ( Oct 28, 2012) Lots of parks to spend time at and plenty of fields to play baseball, softball, football, soccer, basketball, tennis, or almost any other sport. Traffic is not too bad either. There are plenty of stores and other shopping areas around Oak Lawn including Chicago Ridge Mall.

...Read More life though is a bit of a hit and miss, depending on what you like to do. There are a few bars around the village, but I spend most of my time going to other nearby villages to have fun. This town seems much more suited for couples and families than anyone else.

Being connected with 294 makes it pretty easy to commute outside of Oak Lawn. I spent 5 years driving back and forth from Chicago and I had about a 20-25 minutes commute without traffic, and about 45-60 minutes during evening rush hour.

Advocate Christ Hospital is currently expanding and is easily accessable and the local library expanded a few years ago. Living in Oak Lawn for 16 years and have not had a problem with crime yet. Read Less
The Joys of Oak Lawn, Illinois 4 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 16, 2012) I have lived in Oak Lawn, Illinois for several years after relocating from a small Southern town. The culture shock that came with moving to a suburn of one of the country's largest metropolises was very easy to overcome, as Oak Lawn is teeming with culture and activity year-roun ...Read More d. The city certainly benefits greatly from it's close proximity to downtown Chicago. Living in Oak Lawn I felt as though I was never more than a quick car ride at the furthest from any type of restaurant, store or activity that I wanted.

Despite being surrounded by a number of Chicago suburbs Oak Lawn feels very much like the small village it is modeled after. It has a very calm neighborhood feel and oftentimes I found myself never having to leave the immediate area to find what I needed or wanted to do. The local newspaper "The Reporter" is extremely local, focusing only on the Oak Lawn area. This makes it very easy to stay up-to-date with the happenings of the community.

My favorite feature of Oak Lawn is the extensive park system prevalent throughout the suburb. Oak Lawn maintains a park system that feels very rural. Centennial Park is a sprawling complex in the middle of the village. It allows me to enjoy open fields, walking paths and even public swimming pools and indoor fitness centers.

Traffic is certainly the biggest headache of Oak Lawn. While the commute is short distance-wise to anywhere around the Chicago area, the nature of the city means any trip will likely find me sitting in some congestion. I can look past it, but there is some frustration being so close to downtown yet unable to enjoy the public transportation that others do. Still, living in Oak Lawn is a perfect combination of city life mixed with a small-town community feel. Read Less
