Mapleton-Flatlands: Live Well, But Be A Little Cautious.

Before moving out West, I was job chasing and that endeavor landed me in the Mapleton-Flatlands. I was only there for a short time, but it was long enough to get to know it and how it functions.

Mapleton-Flatlands neighborhoods are pretty typical of other Brooklyn neighborhoods. The thing that bowled me over when I got there was the price of housing. For a small studio rental expect to pay between $900 and $1000 per month. For a one bedroom with any amenities at all, expect that to increase to around $1300. If you purchase property there, don't even look at anything under $450,000. It'll probably be old and "dimly lit."

Yes, it is expensive to live in the Mapleton-Flatlands area. There were charming features in the area. I lived near the intersection of Avenue M and Bedford. I loved the quick access to the public playgrounds and parks. I am a single guy with no kids, so I did not have a chance to get to know the schools in the area. The children however did seem to have an uplifting attitude.

Crime, I would say, is a little high for a neighborhood like Mapleton-Flatlands that is trying really hard to give itself a facelift. Old New York seeps in however. It seemed as if the neighborhood was featured each day on the news. Without the media, crime could be sensed, but after living there for a few months, the "good" people teach eachother how to be safe.

The commute was a cinch, either to the city, Jersey, or the beach. Again simple, but it was way too expensive. It also seemed that no matter where you found yourself in the neighborhood, you were always aware of the incredibly dense traffic in the King's Highway District to the Southeast. Mapleton-Flatlands, for good old Brooklyn, really is an O.K. place to live. The social atmosphere wasn't bad either. All types were evenly represented, and courtesy still seemed to have its place.
