East Village New York: Great Food, Better Culture, Crappy Nature User Rating 5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) In the not too distant past, before marriage and kids, I lived in Manhattan's East Village. And though I've since settled in more verdant pastures, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I miss the heck out of that vibrant concrete jungle, tucked between Houston Street, 14th Street, ...Read More the East River and Fourth Avenue.

If you prefer to chill with Mother Nature on a daily basis, the East Village is probably not the best place for you to live. Flora and fauna -- outside of humankind -- are few and far between. But if you crave culture and eclectic living, then the East Village may be the urban oasis of your dreams -- for it's a near-perfect menagerie of high-class, working class and alternative culture. Within about twenty square blocks sits a microcosm of the world. The people seemingly hail from every corner of the globe as do the culinary options not to mention the diverse shopping opportunities. It even boasts a few religious landmarks!

The East Village in New York, New York is teeming with history. It's where the Gangs of New York once fought their battles; it's also where beatnik culture was birthed. Additionally, many streets are still dotted with architectural relics dating back to the Industrial Revolution.

The most magical thing about the East Village is its extremes. Chic, Michelin-starred restaurants share walls with grimy mom-and-pop sandwich shops; pre-war buildings, boasting beaux arts crown molding, rub easements with modern, glass structures designed by high-profile architects. And stay on the lookout for film crews! Since the area is bubbling over with character, it's a popular "on location" spot for New York movie crews.

And while nature is limited in the East Village, on a hot day, you can find refuge on a few 1-block-by-1-block patches of green scattered throughout the area. Though, be warned: if you choose to hit a city green, be prepared to catch some rays in very close proximity to your neighbors, as lawn space is limited in East Village parks.
Back when your grandma used to go bar hopping, even a student could afford a nice-sized place in the East Village. But, like most places in the city that never sleeps, prices have skyrocketed over the last decade. To put it bluntly, the East Village is not Upper East Side expensive, but it also isn't as cheap as Brooklyn, Queens or even Midtown Manhattan, in many cases.

If you enjoy a discordant, but oddly melodic, symphony of culture, people, food and architecture make your way to New York City's East Village. But be warned, if you're a lover of the avant-garde and high energy, you may never want to leave - or will at least miss it very much when it's time to go. Read Less
