My Experience in the Bushwick Neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY User Rating 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 19, 2012) I, like many other people who wander from place to place in NYC have spent a good deal of time in Bushwick, as it is just one of the many neighborhoods I have lived in. While I would really love to sugar coat it and give it a great rating for those considering moving in to Bushwi ...Read More ck, I cannot. It was the least favorite of any neighborhood I have lived in, in NYC. Yes, it is said to be "up and coming," but so far I have seen no evidence of that, with maybe the exception of some slight changes.

Bushwick is comprised of four distinct areas, each of them with their own personality and appeal, or lack of, might be a better way to put it. The industrial section of Bushwick is the section located on the border of East Williamsburg. This area is often referred to as Morgantown, and this is more than likely because of the Morgan Ave subway station. There are bars, lofts, coffee houses, restaurants and of course parties that take place there.

If you head east from there you'll find yourself in the area known as "family Bushwick." The area is predominantly comprised of immigrant families who rent from what are not so fondly known as "slumlords." Recently many hipsters have relocated to Bushwick, causing the rents to go up, which of course is unfair to those who've been living there for years, but such is life. There are some shops, mostly mom and pop, a few places to eat, but not much worth taking about, and maybe two grocery stores. One thing about this area is that it might be considered one of the safer Bushwick neighborhoods, albeit loud. It is not uncommon to hear domestic disputes taking place through the thin walls.

If you want a safer neighborhood to live in, in Bushwick, you will have to look very hard, but whatever you do steer clear of South Bushwick, especially in the vicinity of Myrtle Ave. The few amenities available here are located on Broadway, where only a fool would walk around after dark. This area has the highest amount of "hipsters" moving in but it is also riddled with hostility and crime, so not a great place if you have kids, or enjoy living in a peaceful, crime free environment.
