This city is a small town with a "Mayberry" feel, but I mean that in the best way. The people are friendly, downtown is a treasure, and traffic is nonexistent. There are many parks and the twin rivers mean waterfront access is everywhere. This is one town where you can afford to ...Read More
live on the waterfront. In the last 5-10 years we have built many new restaurants, there are enough chains that you don't feel left out, and downtown is home to increasingly high quality boutiques and local dining choices. This is the ideal place if you enjoy the water, sailing, kayaking, or fishing, and a large national forest for you hunting types. Now for the caveats: This is increasingly a retiree's paradise. Older people from up north flock down here for the golfing and the abundant medical care. There are fewer programs for children and families than a larger, younger city might have. Schools are poorly supported and filled with mostly low income kids. Make sure if you have kids you do your research before you move here and pick the right schools. There are private school options if you are in the 1%. Those in the medical or defense industries will find plentiful jobs but other options are mostly minimum wage. I will say that in just the past year or two the arts scene has started to pick up steam, and several new bars and a brewery have opened up downtown. If you want to see the best the city has to offer, visit on a Friday night during an Art Walk. I would love to see younger people bring new businesses and new life to this city.
