Living in Macon is a great option for those looking for a larger city south of Atlanta that still retains a small-town feel. I can always find something to do such as attending regular street parties, touring historical homes and visiting the annual Cherry Blossom festival. There ...Read More
are not as many well-maintained city parks and swimming pools as would normally be expected, but there are a multitude of water-based activities on the Ocmulgee River and Lake Tobesofkee.
Macon offers many economic opportunities for work. Companies such as the Medical Center of Central Georgia, YKK and Geico average between 500-6000 employees each, and new businesses locate to the area often, like the new fulfillment center from Amazon that was announced in October, 2017. Robins Air Force Base, located just 20 miles from Macon, employs 5,938 service members, 13,686 federal civilians, 1,843 contractors, 587 NAF employee and 176 AAFES employees.
Mercer University and Middle Georgia State University are both large higher education institutions that are located in Macon, and both are excellent schools with a number of desirable programs and degrees. I attended Middle Georgia State College and enjoyed the classes and the attractive campus.

I lived here ten years ago so it may have changed ,but no way it changed enough to score an 80 on this site. The crime in Macon is absolutely horrible. It was one of the worst cities in the country for crime in 2007-2008 so even if thats changed, I can't imagine its anywhere rem ...Read More
otely safe now. North Macon near zebulon was nice and the new mall area was nice but the rest of Macon is far from livable. There is no nightlife unless gun fights are your thing. I still know many people in the area and they only stay because family are entrenched. Ive never met anyone who loves Macon. Please do not move here, if you do you will regret it. The summers are very hot and humid and theres not anything nature can provide to entertain you either. As a native Georgian, I can honestly say the only decent places to live in this state are metro Atlanta or the coast. Macon, Albany, Americus, and Augusta are horrible cities and unless you get the job of your dreams, do yourself a favor and not even visit these places must less live. In summary, I feel Areavibes gets it right most of the time, but it egregiously misses with this assessment. Personally, If I were offered the best job I could ever imagine but it was in Macon, Albany, Americus, or Augusta, i'd turn it down without equivocation.

My husband and I visited Macon in March 2009 for Macon's International Cherry Blossom Festival. We enjoyed a couple concerts, arts and crafts against a backdrop of Yoshino Cherry trees. My husband wasn't a huge fan of all the walking we did, but I loved it! One of my favorite thi ...Read More
ngs about our trip to Macon was staying at the 1842 Inn. The inn combines romance and elegance in a historic antebellum style. The stay was a bit expensive, but we were treating ourselves to a special weekend alone.
To get back on my husband's good side, we visited the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. There are so many interesting and affordable things to do and attractions to see in the city of Macon that we had a hard time choosing what to do. The city's Southern charm and friendliness made us feel very welcome. We're hoping to visit again for the Cherry Bloom festival again next year. We would like to check out some of the historic homes in the Macon area. I definitely recommend visiting Macon!
