I lived in Levittown, NY during the 1990's in a cute little Levitt home my boyfriend inherited from his family. Living on Long Island had so many wonderful advantages, it is only now that I have relocated to another state from New York that I genuinely miss what Levittown had to ...Read More
offer.
Levittown was one of the first housing developments built after WWII for returning veterans by William Levitt the architect of planned communities. Small, affordable homes of about 1,200 square feet were designed to give middle class Americans the dream of home ownership.
Levittown is about 40 miles west of Manhattan in the Township of Hempstead. This area is also called the Five Towns area, being comprised of five separate towns. This family oriented community has easy access to Manhattan by way of the the Long Island Railroad which runs regular commuter trains on a schedule to suit all timetables. Close proximity to the best of New York City's cultural and international sites and events are a real plus. This is a great place to raise children. New York schools are one of the top rated public school systems in the country. There are beautiful state parks and nature preserves close by; Robert Moses State Park located on the Atlantic Ocean, Fire Island, a summer beach community with no cars allowed, Westbury Gardens, and scenic town parks with hiking trails and baseball diamonds and public golf courses. This town has fabulous restaurants and great shopping.
One of the down sides of this location is traffic. Getting around town can be challenging during rush hours. The cost of living in New York can also send you into sticker shock, so plan on living expenses to be rather high.
