A Dying Town 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 21, 2020) I lived in Lakeport for 29 years. For much of the time, it was a nice community, but it has been steadily devastated by California state and local mismanagement. The cost of living has skyrocketed with water rationing on the horizon. It's surrounding natural beauty has been devas ...Read More tated by the wildfires with 60% of the beautiful county having burned down in the last five years. The economic devastation of the fires, and the state's dreadful laws that has let out criminals from the prisons while reducing theft of less than 900 dollars to a misdemeanor, combined with the lack of mental health care has been crippling. A once thriving little town, much of it's business district is now vacant, most of the restaurants were finally killed by the draconian lockdown from COVID 19. There is a movie theater, but the family fun center has closed, the bowling alley has closed, and there are no real places for young people to recreate unless they are part of a church youth group. Since church attendance is low, there are far too many kids with little to do.
Most specialists have left the area while the hospital now has fewer than 20 beds. Residents have to travel around the mountains to Santa Rosa or Ukiah to see a specialist and even Family Practice doctors are growing fewer in number as local doctors retire.
This is a sad, sad example of how Californian mismanagement of land and the economy is destroying whole towns. Read Less
