The Kankakee River is the city's greatest landmark and runs directly through the city. The river features the Kankakee River Dam which supplies electricity to the city and surrounding communities. Fishing on the river is a pastime for many living in the area. Amtrak maintains a depot at Kankakee with daily service o and from Chicago.
Architecture is a focal point of the city's homes and buildings. The great architect Frank Lloyd Wright was the principal designer on two of Kankakee's historic homes. A coworker of Wright, Zachary Taylor Davis, was the principal on the building of the Kankakee County courthouse from 1909-1912.
