We live in Westchase, Houston Texas, and I have watched Westchase grow from quiet neighborhood with towering pines, to a metropolis of sorts. With the addition of the Sam Houston Toll Road system, this is about what we expected, but way nicer. It did slice the neighborhood in hal ...Read More
f, but they breached it quite well because we still can get to old Memorial without traffic. Not everything we dreaded happened. We still have all our nice shops, but now they are combined with the right mix of more contemporary chain brands. I like being able to get clothing from the outlets and have them tailored at the same small shops as always.
We still have close access to a LA Madeleine's bakery. Since we border Interstate 10, we can still get over to Ikea's pretty quickly. Sometimes, we go just for lunch and catch Memorial City mall on the way home. Our favorite Popeye's Chicken has not changed, although, there is one closer to the house now. Our favorite Mexican restaurant Fandango's is north of Westchase on Westheimer. Tinseltown movie theatre is easier to get to via the toll way system. We still take Memorial up to the Galleria area to the Bombay Brassiere and the Lockhart Barbecue.
What is important is that the spirit of the neighborhood was respected. The neighborhood was not changed it was modernized. The tall pines that defined the neighborhood were made into accents that breakup the newly concreted businesses. The access between the old and the newer areas are blurred, and there was an effort to incorporate an entire neighborhood renovation. Westchase was beginning to become a drive through neighborhood with no real definition. Houston is growing in leaps and bounds. We are lucky to have preserved so much of what makes our neighborhood great while having new infrastructure in place to manage further growth. When neighborhoods change this fast, it is easy to lose the personality and the history of areas like Westchase. That history is the experiences that our families were raised in, and we fought to keep it. From the looks of things, it looks like we won.
