Meyerland is still Meyerland. User Rating 3 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 06, 2014) I live in Meyerland, Houston Texas. Meyerland was once the quintessential upper middle class neighborhood. With Houston getting so large and the American demographic aging, the neighborhood has really turned into a retirement, bedroom type community. With that changing demographi ...Read More c, comes a lot of change. The Casa Ole that was at Post Oak and West Bellfort has been replaced by a Tamale Company restaurant. However, The Luby's has been upgraded and it has been combined with a Fuddruckers in the parking lot adjacent to the West Bellfort Walmart. Our favorite Whataburger is in the same place along with our Kroger's grocery store, but between the 610 loop and the Bellaire community, most things have changed. The sprawl has made it to that part, although having such a large shopping center that close is a good thing. There is a James Coney Island, a Salt Grass Steakhouse and a Mexican Cantina in the same parking lot. There are many new nursing homes going up, somewhat depressing, but change is change.

The major event that changed the neighborhood was hurricane Ike. It totally flooded most neighborhoods, and although it was more than five years ago, the neighborhood has not recovered, and most people who were capable moved on. The bayou system is greatly improved, and it no longer floods after each rain. The infrastructure, including the sidewalks, has been updated. There are no more neighborhood bars, but Bellaire is very accessible. It is nice to get out of the neighborhood briefly without driving too far into traffic. We are aging, and it is comforting to know our neighborhood is still catering to our needs. Places that we need to go are still close, and we can feel the freedom of getting to them without assistance. Meyerland is not dying it is changing. We can accept that. Besides, having a new Schlotskys and a Wing Stop is nice, even for us. The banks are still there. Their names have changed, but the tellers remained, and they are cognizant of our special needs. In that way, it is still the same neighborhood. Read Less
