Reland Area and the City of Homestead User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Dec 09, 2019) I live in the Redland area. We don't have sidewalks, we live on a dirt road, and I have four neighbors. It's peaceful and quiet out here. When you go into the central part of town, it's not as bad as painted by some of the other reviews. Homestead WAS a big farming town; it still ...Read More is a farming town. You can find a lot of South American people living here. They aren't rude or gross. Usually, they are friendly people; if they can't communicate with you, they smile and try to figure it out. They play soccer in any empty field they find. The city is pretty clean. It is rare to see a homeless person. The public schools in the area aren't the greatest. There are a lot of places to eat, from mom and pop to big restaurants. There aren't a whole ton of stores, but the staples are here, and they have a good variety. I have always received excellent care at the local hospital, as well.
The PD is a little shady, in my opinion. They love DUI checkpoints and pulling people over for not wearing their seatbelts. Do watch out for the red light cameras everywhere. I feel like the only reason it has gone a bit downhill is that a lot of people prefer the cheaper housing. Landowners have sold out to developers, and more and more houses are popping up. More people means more traffic, more commerce, more everything. All of a sudden, this little town became not so small. I am a bit sad that things are changing and growing. But isn't that the fate of every little town anyway? Read Less
Homestead Is a Horrible place to live period...... User Rating 0.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 24, 2019) So, where would you start to give a good picture of Homestead? Well, to start if you are not Hispanic or have some ethnic background attached to Cuba or South America you will always feel like an outsider here. Everyone uses Spanish as a first language and acts like it is bothe ...Read More rsome to speak English. The locals who were born and raised here seem to be oblivious to it and somehow think it is normal. If you are coming here and have children who have lived anywhere else in America you are doing them a grave disservice because the schools are atrocious and all the faculty once again speak Spanish first and will alienate your English speaking student in a heartbeat by speaking to the other Hispanic students in spanish.
The society as a whole in Homestead is comprised of a bunch of Miami commuters and everyone else is dependent on the government for everything. I mean everything. You cant go into a store without someone swiping their EBT card and thinking that they are gods gift to the world. They have no shame. They live in section 8 homes and just keep procreating causing this once nice farming community to sink farther into the depths of hell.
Actually the only thing nice about Homestead is the weather. If you don't have little kids and don't really care much about the people around you it could be nice. The Keys are close and so is Miami. Getting around is a joke though because everyone drives like they could care less whether they arrived alive or not. Pretty much every accident I hear about involves at least one of the parties having no auto insurance and that brings me to another thing. The auto insurance is super high because the insurance companies constantly have to pay out for uninsured motorist claims. This is because seven times out of ten the other motorist will drive away unless their car can no longer drive or they are to drunk to run.
In summery never believe any of the hype about Homestead. All though they are building new houses all over the place it just means that more Miamians are gonna move down here and trash it. It is common here to stop at a stop light and the person in the car in front of you throws a whole McDonalds bag of trash out the window on the street. They respect nothing let alone one another. So if that is your kind of heaven this is your place. I unfortunately am here for a job and wish that there would be a biblical flood that scoured this town off the face of the earth. It is that bad.... Read Less

You can be out on a date with someone, and for no reason, somone will say something threating like "What you looking at..." or someone wanna be gansta stuff...it is all over Homestead. Every single idiot you see things he is the character Scarface "...say hello to my little friend!". Crime in homestead due to this neaderthal mentallity is probably on par with the likes of chicago, new york, and other cities 5 times the size. Check out the website city -data, put in homestead and compare the crime rates to your town, and that alone will tell you to stay away. I've had tourist run up to me at gas stations and go..."Oh....thank God....I found someone normal...." and then they will lean in to me and say "..what the hell is wrong with these people in homestead". Yes homestead is so bad, tourist fear for their lives stopping for gas because the minute anyone one non-hispanic's gets out of their cars the "local wildlife" make sure to make them feel uninvited. Now about the job market down here, you CAN find a job in homestead, but can you keep a job in homestead is a whole other question. If you are an excellent worker, show up on time, don't give attitude, and treat other people with respect...well than...you're FIRED. No , literally. Homesteadians hate good people who want to make companies grow, don't want to steal from their employers, and help their communities. If you do anything poisitve they WILL try to force you out. Just look at our forcibly jettisoned mayor for corruption a few years ago. Homestead is rife with thugs, pat on the back good ol' boys, and cavemen types who like to control things through "numbers" and force. Homestead does have pluses, are schools are way better than they used to be at least currently, we have a ton of new charter schools too, plenty of churches of every denomination except a mosque, and plenty of stores, restraunts, outdoor activites...etc .etc etc....but it does come back to the small things that make Homestead unbearable. Also the rent hear is insane, I have people I work with who pay 1500 a month for a run down townhouse, with roaches crawling on the walls, in a high crime area, that is barely illuminated at night (which the thieving thug neighbors love, make their job so much easier). If you buy a house, which is lunacy, your price you pay will be inflated and not represent the actual value, so in a few years if you decide to sell, you will definitely lose money. I've seen it over and over again, do NOT buy a house in homestead. "Oh but it's cheaper than miami....blah blah"... NO...do NOT buy a house in homestead. Not one person has been happy with outcome that I know.Long story short if you love Miami, stay in miami, homestead is not "little miami" ....it is "little fallujah" and feels like such. Take time do your own statistical research and see if I am lying. Homestead is one of the most dangerous, unlivable, detestable cities in the nation, not just in FL. It used to be the gatway to paradise (entrance to the FL keys), now adays it feels like the 9th level of hell. Oh yeah and it hot and humid as hell in homestead, almost always 80+ huidity and temps rangin normally from 80-90 degrees with "feel like" temp in the 100-110 range....yeah, 9th level of hell seems accurate allright. The Sleepy Town of Homestead Florida User Rating 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( Mar 10, 2015) I lived in Homestead Florida in the early 1980s. I was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base for three years. The city of Homestead has a flat terrain with suburbs and a very small city presence. The houses are cinder block and generally one level, although there are a few homes ...Read More that had two stories. For me, there was more of a small town atmosphere. It was clear that the city depended on the revenue from the military personnel. There were no shopping malls but a few strip malls darted the landscape. If you wanted to shop you would have to drive north for about twenty five miles to Kendall for the decent sized Dadeland Mall.

It is close to the Everglades National Park and Key West which is south of the city. This was great for fishing and camping. You are basically at the gateway to the Keys, which consist of a two lane highway to the ‘bottom' of the United States. The drive on the overseas highway has spectacular views especially when you get to the seven mile bridge, which leads you to Key West. You will find the original Jimmy Buffet Restaurant, which is a hole in the wall with a real conch republic feel. The sunsets are everything you have heard. The pace of Homestead is sleepy and there are never traffic jams. There are no memorable restaurants to mention. There is no nightlife, which means you would have to head north to Miami like I did.

I have been back to Homestead since I lived there. Not much has changed except there is no more Homestead Air Force Base since Hurricane Andrew wiped it off the face of the earth. In its place is a field of nothing except a few building relics where it stood. The city is still the same with cinder block homes and strip malls. There is a Wal-Mart now, but if you want to shop you still have to head north to Kendall and the Dadeland Mall. Read Less
