The Ups and Downs of Living Closer to the City. User Rating 3 rating By Anonymous ( May 16, 2018) Hamtramck, Michigan is located just northwest of Detroit. The city is often known by locals as being a sketchier part of town with crime never quite having gone down, especially in recent years. The city of Detroit is seeming to recover from it's violent past while Hamtramck, tho ...Read More ugh never quite as bad as Detroit, is still seeing a slight rise in crime each year.

The housing market in Hamtramck is poor, with most homeowners either leaving the city or renting out their houses to lower income families which tends to be a recipe for the decline of any community. Hamtramck has a poor public school system with deteriorating buildings and a very high student to teacher ratio. The police are often not available to respond to less serious crimes leaving the residents having to protect themselves in many cases, like against burglary and theft.

Overall, Hamtramck, though once a nice place to live many years ago, is still in a transition to becoming a nice place to live again and is not quite there yet. The city does have potential, but if you're looking to raise a family, you're better off looking elsewhere. Read Less
