George Mason, VA: Small college town close to DC metro life User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 23, 2018) George Mason, VA or more specifically--Fairfax County; is a major college town that is home to George Mason University; and as you might expect, most of the population is either attending, employed by or somehow associated with the local university. The unemployment rate is extre ...Read More mely low and there are many global companies that have headquartered or have major presence in the area. Since it’s also really close to the DC metro area, housing is a bit higher than the national average--with simple studios going for more than $1200 a month. This is definitely cost-prohibitive for penny-pinching students attending the local university and hence, the reason you will find most of them living in campus housing. Since it is primarily a college town, you also will find that incomes and education levels for the local George Mason population tend to also trend higher than average, which probably also contributes to the exorbitantly-priced housing market. The primary schools are among some of the best in the area and nation and the population does skew more affluent than national averages. There are also many global companies in the area, like Another probable factor is that the city is a DC suburb and everything in close proximity to the nation’s capital is pretty much expensive.
I moved here for my job at the university about a year ago and love the area. It’s close enough to DC to go and enjoy all the amenities you would normally associate with a large metro area, like: the clubs, concerts, restaurants, malls, hotels, night clubs, museums, theater shows and other assorted entertainment venues, but when you want to unwind from the frenzy of the awful traffic and recharge with the quiet ambiance of small cafes and coffee shops, somewhat slower traffic and just a more manageable pace of life, then George Mason is great for that. With an official population of less than 10,000; the locals are friendly and tight-knit.
