30+ year former resident 0.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 01, 2025) There’s no decent work here that aligns with the cost of living. There is nothing here worth the weather you have to endure. There is one grocery store, 2 high end grocery stores and 2 very low end grocery stores. Even the summers are cold and windy. The powers in charge do not ...Read More allow progress. The home local improvement center is 4x the cost of Home Depot which is 2 hours away. The things worth doing are always sold out quickly. The one beach that is nice is packed with dogs and people. The housing is small and moldy, if you can afford it. The meth problem is so bad here. Your possessions are not safe here. The movie theater is falling apart. The mall is almost deserted. There is an art scene but it’s flooded and you have to be extremely PC to be part of it. No thanks. I raised my kids here, there is no longer a birthing center that won’t push you into a c section. The schools are abysmal in many communities and the ones that are worth sending the kids to are massively competitive. The only remaining industry is healthcare and even that is scarce and difficult to keep. I tried to love it here but I’m not a party girl. Im not in the in-crowd. I’ve owned 3 houses here and had so many problems remodeling and just getting basic honesty from people that it was almost impossible to survive. My husband has gotten ripped off multiple times as a contractor here. I’m so glad we moved. Life can actually be good! Read Less

It’s disgusting, there’s trash everywhere. The streets are a total mess.

The homeless and addict problems are completely out of control. And this isn’t an indictment ...Read More on homeless people. It’s an Indictment on the city. The tax rates are close to the highest in the state (which is saying a lot) and the city does nothing with the money that benefits the people in any way.

Housing is extremely expensive and extremely scarce. The cost of living is ridiculously high.

There’s also just… nothing to do. The local parks are just camp grounds for the homeless and are not maintained at all by the local government. There’s great hiking but you need to drive an hour minimum to get to it.

The food is terrible.

The city planning is also a complete nightmare. Very nonsensical street design with very terrible sight lines around corners of intersections. Expect to get in a car wreck here. The streets don’t align on a grid in most of the city either. To get to one end of Summer St to the other, you have to make 8 turns. I’m not even making that up.

Do not move here. If you have to move to Humboldt, at least get to Arcata. Read Less

Eureka is the largest coastal city between San Francisco, and Portland. I knew I wanted to live in a city on the coast, and Eureka did not disappoint in that aspect. One of the best areas in Eurek ...Read More a is the downtown area. It has one of my favorite attractions which is the Sequoia Park Zoo.

One major issue I've had with the city is the crime rate. While the crimes are not too serious, there are far too many break ins, robberies, and theft for my liking. I have not been victim yet, but I know numerous friends who have been. Keep your belongings close, and lock up anything around your house, do not leave it out.

Despite that, I still find that I enjoy living in Eureka. When family comes to visit, there are a lot of attractions to visit. Like the numerous museums, and in the summer time the weather isn't too bad, and we can head down for a beautiful walk along the coast. Read Less
