Elmhurst, IL - Land of the Elm Trees

I lived in Elmhurst, Illinois about 10 years ago and for a suburban community with a relatively modest population, about 32,000, it was a relatively quiet community. I was fortunate enough to live close to an elementary school within walking distance, so that skews my view of the access to education issue. Overall, if you are looking for an exciting nightlife, Elmhurst will likely disappoint you.

Now this does not mean that there isn't anything to do. I attended a concert by the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and was very impressed. The nice thing about it was there was not a bad seat in the house. What makes Elmhurst such an attractive place to live is more of its access to everywhere you want to be - even if it isn't in Elmhurst. There is an Amtrak stop in the heart of the city that makes going to Chicago cheap and easy.

Of course, relocating to Elmhurst will be an above average financial adventure. Estimate you will have to have an annual income around $100k to live there without straining your budget. There are the typical Midwestern four seasons, so there are times of huge snowfalls and hot summer weather. Most of the homes where I lived had garages, which means extra shoveling in the winter. In my area there was a ban on parking your car in the street after 9 p.m. Overall, it is one of those places that is great for raising a family and the city design is versatile enough to access major expressways and public transportation with ease.
