I've lived in this area for 5+ years. I have been pleasantly surprised at the options this small city offers. Maybe it's not fair to call it a small city because it is part of Metro East, the IL side of the Greater St Louis area. Last I looked, St Louis MSA was @ 2.8M. Almost 70 ...Read More
0,000 of that live on the Metro East side. I can drive over to the city in 20-30 min. depending on route taken, time of day. It's a half hour drive or so to Lambert Airport in the city.
It is a quiet and very safe area to live. It has grown quite a bit since I moved here. Shopping options are decent. Anything they don't have here, I can get in St Louis. But new stores are added regularly as the area grows. The school system is solid, and most parents are pretty pleased with offerings. Sports is a big thing, for both boys and girls.
We have Dierbergs here, a St Louis chain of grocers that I am fond of. We also have a long-standing health food grocer: Green Earth, with amazing options too. Now they've added an international grocer. We have both a Home Depot & Lowe's. A huge Walmart, a Target store, and under development is a Meijer's. Too many stores to mention, both chain stores and local. We also a wide variety of restaurants. Again both chain and local. You can see more just scanning google maps.
The city is the 3rd oldest in IL so there is a lot of history here, museums to acknowledge that, and a Route 66 museum, since this area was on the original path of that famous highway. There is a children's museum which is very nice too.
SIU has 2 campuses: Carbondale, the oldest, and Edwardsville, established in 1957. Both now enroll roughly 14K students. So while I would not call Edwardsville a classic "college town," it is indeed a town with a college. Fourteen thousand students is not nothing. They add to the community. I'm sure that is why the health food grocer and restaurant scene have thrived all these years. It also has some great coffee shops. I'm forgetting to mention other attractions, but you'll get the sense of it.
This area has great parks, and the best hiking/biking nature trails I've seen, >130 miles of them. You can see more on mcttrails.org. If you jog, bike, hike, walk your dog, whatever.... you'd enjoy these trails. I see entire families out biking. We host bicycle races.
There is the Wildey theater which always has some surprises up its sleeve. You never know who may be booked live, or what movies may be showing. Live concerts are given at City Park that has a small amphitheater. The library is also quite good. This is just one person's review of the area. I've lived in other parts of the country, several medium size, and one large city. I was not sure what to expect but I've been pleased overall.
