I lived in Downers Grove for three years while attending flight school at O'Hare Airport and I loved the city. It has an upbeat attitude in part because it was not affected by the economy as much as other cities were. I especially enjoyed the ease of taking the train to Chicago f ...Read More

The town's municipal facilities are excellent and well maintained. The town has a large Catholic population that I enjoyed. The library was among the finest in the area. I would recommend Downers Grove to anyone, and I get back to the city about 4 times a year so I keep up with its progress.
Downers Grove, Illinois is a unique city in today's economy. It has low unemployment at 6.7 percent, and high population sustainability having lost only 1.8 percent of the population since 2000. The estimated median household income in grew 20 percent from 2000 when it was $65,539 to $72,595 and in 2009. A large segment of the population is working and their earnings are outpacing the state and the country on a household basis percentage basis. The most common occupations were white collar jobs in 2010. The median price for home sales in the 4th quarter of 2011 was $200,000 down from $300,000 in the 2nd quarter of 2010 and down from $350,000 in 2006. It doesn't speak well for the economy in Downers Grove when the median house price drops $100,000 in one year, which is the sharpest drop in its history. Crime is very low.
Medical care is rather exceptional with an acute care hospital located in Downers Grove and easy access to three other hospitals with the farthest being 7 miles away. Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove has a Heliport for transporting extremely ill or injured patients. The country's most prestigious school for training osteopathic physicians is located in Downers Grove.
The air quality in Downers Grove is very poor with an Air Quality Index (AQI) level of 36.5 which is higher than the national average. Nitrogen Dioxide and Particulate Matter are the worse components of the AQI. I found this to be a problem.
