I could go through the downtown area all hours of the day and night, and feel reasonably safe, as crime wasn't so bad. If you couldn't find me, I was usually on the towpath hiking or biking. So I can say that then Cumberland, was a decent town.Fast forward to 2017.... After being out of Cumberland for about 13 years, I decided to drive 8 hours to visit for the weekend, and talk about a complete turn around. I was utterly disgusted by the turn around of the city. I walked down the pedestrian mall from one end to the other and back, and was asked about 10 times for a dollar for a hamburger(is that what they call heroin nowadays?) I've seen more addicts and drunks than I ever did when I lived here. I was even surprised the homeless woman Cathy was still roaming the streets(she was ok though, she never asked me for anything, and she was usually nice to talk to).Buildings are falling apart or are boarded up, my old neighborhood, the south end(past the underpass, far deep end of town), has turned into a raggedy a$$ dump, the canal from downtown to the Wiley Ford bridge is strewn with trash.....I seen nothing new to this town to help its image. It seems the city officials do not care what's happening to the town. Its become a disaster zone, and should be deemed unsafe for living.Sorry Cumberland...... I enjoyed you in the 90s, but after my 2017 visit, I shall not visit anymore. If a road trip requires me to drive though on i68, I will take the long way around. As I heard on the CB radio a few years ago about Cumberland:"Look to the left, look to the right, look into the armpit of America."That's basically what the city has become. Read Less

STDs are to be expected when you stop by fast food. For the best nightlife, you can get drunk and pass out on one of the many uncleaned street corners! RUN away from this town! 1 rating By llgmaryland ( Mar 19, 2016) I will tell you why this is the worst place to live. The summers in this town are extremely hot and humid. You will want to take 3 baths or showers a day. Then your stuck inside if you want to avoid being miserable in the heat. Then your health will decline because your inside in ...Read More stead of being outside and active. Then you get sick from the cold A.C. Winters are bone chilling cold and miserable so your stuck inside again. Then you get cabin fever. You will watch alot of T.V. so I hope you like re-runs of COPS and Ghost Hunting shows. The air outside smells bad much of the time and don't know if it is the old, stale, cannal water or the stinky CSX smoke or people's garbage or all of that. It is really crowded here and the houses are so close together that you can pass your neighbor a bar of soap. The parking here is horrendous! Parking on both sides of narrow streets and having to move over for people to get by. No parking down town unless you want to walk in the bad weather for a block or two. There is only one mall in the next city Lavale, and everybody is usually there at once so it is always crowded. The streets and sidewalks are small and banged up too and the traffic is terrible. There is a light on Virginia avenue that makes you wait forever. There are no places to shop here plan on going miles out of town to the Outlets. There is only JCP, Sears, and Walmart. There is a Kohls here but the TJMax here is a joke. There are some pretty decent restaraunts. The best being Reuby Tuesday, and AppleBees. Cumberland is getting a Cracker Barrel which is good. Un-fortunately, if your a private person, and you don't necessarily want people to know what your doing all the time, what your into, or whatever, you will have a very hard time keeping it private. Everyone knows everyone else here, and if they don't know you they have a way of finding you out. They will dig for information on you, and if they can't get it out of you they will get it from your family. If you don't have family here they will get it through where you work or from the places you frequent. Downfalls of living in a small area. There are no decent jobs here that pay well. When you graduate from h.S. or college move as soon as you can! This place is a trap. Once your in it it is doubly hard to get back out. They will over charge you for everything while you live here because the city is broke and desperate for your money. Even the richest people here really are not living that good. It makes no sense to live in Cinderella's castle when you live in the middle of no where. This place is too windy, too rainy, and too windy. It has more dreary days than sunny days and whoever said that this place has mountains have never seen the Rockies! Move to Colorado instead! RUN away from Cumberland! Read Less

Typical city with low income, low education, and high unemployment 3 rating By WRollins84 ( May 08, 2015) Despite the title above, Cumberland (and the surrounding area) isn't all that bad. Like most things in life, it is what you make of it. If you live in the slums, do drugs, and drop out of school, then you'll end up like the two disgruntled individuals who posted negative reviews ...Read More here. Jobs don't pay much, but you're an idiot if you think cost of living is high. If you drive an hour west to Morgantown or east to Hagerstown, you tack on an addl 25 or 30% to housing and rent costs. The main job sites here are CSX (Railroad), ABL/IBM, the hospital, multiple prisons, and teaching jobs at the many local schools and 3 local colleges. It also isn't hard to get a decent job, because competition is extremely weak.

Shopping and dining options are poor for the most part, although there are a few decent restaurants. The mall lacks diversity - JC Penny, Sears, and Bon Ton are all pretty much the same, except Sears sells electronics and appliances. While Wal-Mart isn't anything to write home about, it's a luxury shopping destination compared to the Wal-Marts I've been to in the Baltimore area. Generally friendly staff at most places, and the people in town are nice unless they are disgruntled with their lives, and you can usually who they are when you look at them.

The nightlife is mediocre at best, and it's hard to find a decent mate around here because every 5 thinks she's a dime and every guy is sleaze, so most women end up single moms by 23 years old, and most dad's try to get out of paying child support, either by not working or by disappearing. The crime rate isn't that high in most parts of town, but if you live in south end or one of several ghettos then you should expect a higher crime rate, unfortunately. If you graduate, keep your nose clean, and you're willing to work, then you'll find that Cumberland is a fine place to live. The people giving negative reviews are most likely part of the problem with the town, not the solution. The solution is make ~30k a year by actually working, keep all your teeth, and don't do drugs (you can group the last two), and you'll find that that amount of money goes a long way here. Read Less

The circuit court is more corrupt where Judge Timothy Finan based on actual witnesses knows he steals illegal drugs along with a deputy sheriff and uses the stolen drugs for the judges personal use and when the innocent law enforcement officer looks for the drugs to bring to court for trial the drugs is not in evidence lockup and the crooked drug user judge dismisses the charges because he stole the drugs. Even his longtime court assistant used marijuana that was taken from evidence lockup and both used the drugs. Nightlife last till 6 PM since the whiners banned strip clubs and entertainment beyond downtown. Shopping is non existent and people don't want real stuff and they all benefit a bunch of bible thumpers at Wal-Mart aka Commie Mart and yes a lot of their employees are a bunch of drug users because they are whiners. Besides Airborne thinks the cost of living is low but the cost of living is high when you factor food, gasoline, electric. Employment is not great for anyone regardless of education and unlike Airborne story the jobs aren't their and they are non existent and Every Governor from Mandel to O'Malley helped killed off jobs and made the cost of living go up. Besides where is the shooting range at because the state of Maryland shut them all down because whiners got their way. Regarding jobs, there are many opportunities for those with a college education, former military, or those with technical skills. The major employers are CSX (the railroad), federal and state prisons, and the hospital. There is crime, but it is kept under control by local and state police. It is my opinion that the crime present is due in part to the family members of the prisoners in the local prisons who have moved to the area. Also, since Cumberland is in a strategic area, there is opportunity for drug trafficking. Crime is never going to be as high as in cities such as Baltimore, Washington DC, or other major cities in the US. I am from Puerto Rico and I like the sense of community in Cumberland and the surrounding areas. Besides, I get to go to the range to shoot my guns, hike in the local forests, and ski at the resort not too far west of the city. Read Less

Cumberland where thugs and corruption at the District Court House in the Court Commissioner run rampant and where is the Attorney General. Shopping avoid Sears Auto repair they ripoff people and almost cause car crashes and the law doesn't crack down for violation of laws.
