      Coquitlam, BC

Located in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Coquitlam is a suburban city in the greater Vancouver Area, just a short distance away from the Vancouver metropolis. Cradled by the Coquitlam and Fraser rivers and extending into the Coquitlam and Pitt lakes, the area offers abundant natural beauty and many outdoor recreational activities. The city is located in one of the warmest regions in Canada although it receives heavy precipitation year round. Our Coquitlam Livability guide will help you explore the best of living in the city, from its warm and multicultural community to its many festivals and cultural events.

The Greater Vancouver Area has some of the highest rents in the country and the area’s popularity has only grown in recent years due to the temperate climate, employment opportunities and quality of life on offer. As rents in Coquitlam are relatively less expensive than in downtown Vancouver, the city is a popular commuter suburb that offers residents all the perks of quiet suburban life including fresh air, open parklands, good educational facilities and activities for children. Thus, professionals who work downtown, especially those with young children, tend to favour this suburb. However, while the commute is short, you’ll likely need a car to get around as public transport, although available, is not too frequent or well connected. The city is served by TransLink, which has a number of bus services running throughout the city and connecting to other municipalities in Metro Vancouver.

Coquitlam is a multicultural community that is popular with East Asian and South Asian immigrants and has a large population of Chinese and Persian residents. To experience the vibrant culture of the Persian community, any Coquitlam local will recommend taking part in the Persian new year Fire Festival, a popular draw that involves the age old tradition of jumping through fire to burn people’s spirits in preparation for New Year. Another cultural offering that highlights the unique and diverse character of Coquitlam includes the Place des Arts in the historic neighbourhood of Maillardville, which showcases the best of local arts as well as numerous cultural events.

While you’re in Coquitlam, you should definitely make the most of the stunning nature and beautiful outdoors the region offers. These include a number of parks, trails and waterside spots. The Colony Farm Regional Park and Mundy Park in particular are favourite resident spots that offer ample opportunities for hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, fishing and camping.
