The Good Thing About West Town is That it Includes Wicker Park 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 20, 2012) I have lived in Wicker Park for the last 9 years and a lot has changed since I first moved to the neighborhood. In general, West Town is located within the boxed area from North Avenue from the North, Elston Ave or Interstate 90 from the East, Grand Ave from the South and Western ...Read More Ave from the West.

The good areas, and when I say good, I mean the areas in West Town where I would feel safe walking around at night are generally North of Division and East of Damen. Outside of those areas, things can get a little sketchy especially down near Chicago Ave.

Okay, back to the good parts. First, there are a lot of good residential areas in West Town. I live near the intersection of Ashland and Damen and bought my condo in 2008. According to recent neighborhood sales data the value of my home hasn't really decreased in last couple years and if I wanted I could probably sell it at breakeven or even make a small profit. You can't say that for many areas of Chicago. I do know that there are a lot of people moving into the area.

The restaurant and nightlife is great. There are too many great restaurants at the corner of North Avenue and Milwaukee to write about here, but I would like to comment on a few.

First, if you are interested in non-traditional tapas you should try out People Lounge. It is a small quaint place, the wine is good and food is better. People's is reasonably priced too.

Next, if you are interested in American food with a high end flavor, I encourage you to try out the Fifty-Fifty bar and restaurant. The Fifty-Fifty is near Damen Avenue and Division Avenue and was started by the manager and chef of famous seafood joint down in the Chicago Gold Coast area. The Fifty-Fifty has a lobster sandwich to die for.

Lastly, if you are looking for food and some nightlife I definitely recommend Moonshine. Moonshine is located on Division Avenue about halfway between Damen Avenue and Ashland Avenue. Moonshine has great pizza and salads but is known for its nightlife. I know from experience that Moonshine has some great tequila.

Overall, West Town is a fun place to live, but be watchful of the "bad" areas.

Because West Town is comprised of several smaller neighborhoods, each with a distinct feel, it is home to a wide variety of residents.

The West Town neighborhood is home to a vast array of restaurants ranging from trendy eateries such as Hot Chocolate, Crust, and Mana to scrumptious and inexpensive ethnic delights such as Cafe Irazu, a wildly popular Costa Rican spot. In addition to restaurants, there are plenty of shopping options, especially in Wicker Park along Milwaukee Street, which is a popular shopping destination for locals and tourists alike.

While much of the West Town neighborhood has improved over the past several years, petty crime is still a problem, so visitors should practice the same caution as they would in any urban neighborhood. While I've only had a problem with the occasional car break-in, I have known a few mugging victims, so visitors and residents should exercise reasonable caution.

As a former south-sider who bounced around the north-side for almost twenty years, I'm happy to have found this neighborhood, and now consider it my home; just don't make me cheer for the Cubs. Read Less
