Northside Living User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 05, 2014) I moved to West Ridge in Chicago, IL about three years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. It is middle class area located along the far north of the city. Filled with a rich multiethnic culture, many historic buildings, and St. Scholatica Academy, West Ridge is a wonde ...Read More rful neighborhood. Being so far north from downtown, it enjoys more space than its southern neighbors as well as more greenery. It boasts eight parks and is enclosed within Howard to the north, Bryn Mawr to the south, Western to the east, and the north branch of the Chicago River to the west. Depending on where you live, a 24-hour train, the red line, could be one block away. Being toward the end of the line, the train is rarely, if ever, standing room only.

Unfortunately, being so far north comes with its own unique issues in a city like Chicago. Transportation is much longer. Because you are in the far northern section of the city, it takes about an hour by train on low traffic days. During the morning commute, however, expect to add thirty minutes to this. Driving and busing also take a fair amount of time no matter which back roads you take to your destination. Weather can also be an issue as Chicago plows the snow from its center, outward, so you may find yourself snowed in during the morning hours. Another thing it lacks are high class shopping areas. If you are a fan of name brand, you will have to head downtown.

Aside from the minor inconveniences, West Ridge is a thriving section of the city. During spring, summer, and fall months (about May through September), there is non-stop activity. Movies at the parks, street fairs, food fairs, and neighborhood celebrations fill the air with friendliness and cheer in honor of the greenery and warmth. Depending on how close you are to a main road, there can be more than enough night life of countless varieties. Whether you enjoy a high scale bar or prefer live bands, West Ridge is sure to whet your appetite. Read Less
