Historic Roseland: More than Meets the Eye User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) I lived in the neighborhood of Roseland for more than twenty years, including all of my adolescent and adult life. Roseland is a neighborhood of communities located on the south side of Chicago. The communities within Roseland include Rosemoor, Fernwood, Princeton Park and Lilyd ...Read More ale. The boundaries include Cottage Grove Avenue to the east, 107th and 99th streets to the north, Halsted Avenue to the west and 115th Street to the south. Today, Roseland is one of the largest and most populated areas on Chicago's South side. It is easily accessible by public transportation including CTA Red Line, bus and Metra. There is also nearby shopping next door in Historic Pullman community at the new Wal-Mart located just off of Interstate 94 at 111th Street.

Roseland is primarily made up of residential housing including mainly city bungalows and two flat single-family residences. For many years Roseland has always been a great place to live, work and play, but due to a decline in blue-collar jobs in the manufacturing industry, the economic climate took a turn for the worse and crime increased.

Despite the economic failures, Roseland still has a lot to offer its residents and visitors. The beautiful architecture is one reason to visit. Take a drive down south Michigan Avenue and stop at the corner of 107th street to view the exquisite detail of the design of Lilydale Progressive M.B. Church. As you move along the road, you will see abandoned buildings and Roseland Christian Ministries Centers. The church ministry is known for serving the community through its outreach programs. When you approach 111th Street, you will see a plethora of boutiques, stores, salons and restaurants. One of my favorite places on this strip is Old Fashioned Donuts. Stop by this shop to get a tasty treat. If you are looking for recreation, check out Palmer Park located at 201 E. 111th Street. Every morning, no matter how cold the temperatures may fall, you will always see a jogger or walker utilizing the large size of the park to get their daily exercise. Two additional Roseland parks include Abbott Park, located at 49 E. 95th Street, which has fitness program tailored to Senior Citizens and Fernwood Park, located at 9501 S. Eggleston Ave.

There are two notable schools in the area including Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep Academy and Chicago State University, where rapper Kanye West attended. Roseland was also home to a local U. S. Air force member who was a member of the African-American Elite flight group The Tuskegee Airmen featured in the movie Red Tails, Porter Myrick Sr. Read Less
