Would be a five star neighborhood if not for the gangs 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 10, 2020) New City, formerly known as Back of the Yards is an interesting community.

Drive down 47th any time between 8 am and 6 pm between Ashland and Western and you will find a mile + of absolutely bustling stores, restaurants and activity. It's quite nice to be a part of.

...Read More tly Mexican, the neighborhood shops and restaurants obviously cater to this demographic. This is a community that I relish being a part of, having grown up in a similar kind of neighborhood as a child (predominantly polish).

There are several industrial areas so you'll find lots of jobs working in trucking, heavy industry, and manufacturing. There are two huge nursing homes on Western near the orange line stop, as well.

Western ave starting at 33rd or so and going southbound to Garfield Blvd is absolutely gorgeous. A long park in the middle of the city.

You absolutely cannot find cheaper houses in what I consider a livable area (minimal blight) anywhere else in the city. Homes are inexpensive for as safe and convenient as the area is. This is primarily due to the unfortunate bad reputation the neighborhood has.

Now for the downsides. The gang culture in New City is a stubborn problem that simply will not go away. You will have a few quiet summers in a row and then for whatever reason the gangs will be at war again and shootings/ murders will spike. I really don't want to oversell this issue- if you are careful about the specific block you live on this will not be an issue for you. The gangs are very territorial but will avoid areas with a strong community presence. What I find very interesting is that outside of your gang related crimes theft, robberies, grand theft auto etc are all relatively low and on par with the better Chicago neighborhoods.

The other thing that I find to be a small annoyance is the amount of litter and trash. There is a ton of it around. Obviously this is not a problem that only New City faces, however in all my years living in Chicago it seems to be pronounced here. Read Less
New City: A Useful Stepping Stone 3 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) I moved to New City, Chicago a few years ago, after the recession made the city I lived in at the time too expensive. It is bounded by W. Perching Rd. on the north, W. Garfield Blvd. on the south, the Dan Ryan Expressway on the east, and S. Western Ave. on the west. It's primaril ...Read More y a residential neighborhood. Its primary attraction is that it is very affordable. Rents are cheap, housing prices are both low and stable. It is one of the most affordable places to live in Chicago.

What I liked most about the neighborhood was that it was quite liveable. There were a lot of places to grab a quick bite to eat, and a coffee shop was never very far away. There were a few grocery stores within easy walking distance of my house. There are a lot of parks, multiple libraries, and some theaters too. Some of the parks are quite beautiful. If you prefer to go carless, this is the neighborhood for you. The bus system is excellent. There are stops all over the place, and you never have to wait long for one. I couldn't afford a car, so this made a huge difference.

The big problem with this neighborhood is crime. It's high, even by Chicago standards. The local schools are also pretty bad, from what I've heard. However, I don't have kids, so I can't really say for sure. All in all, this is not a neighborhood for you if you have children. There are better family places in Chicago. If you are single and have a job downtown, though, and can't afford the rents there, this could be just what you're looking for.

There seemed to be a good sense of community in some places. I got along pretty well with the people on my block. We got together once in a while for grilling. Overall, though, it's the kind of place where being a good neighbor means minding your own business. I eventually moved out of New City, just because of the crime rate. However, I don't regret my time there. It let me keep a good job, a job that really helped my career along. When I was ready to, I was able to move up to a more suburban area. I couldn't have done it without my cool cheap little apartment in New City. Read Less
