It is bordered on the north by Montrose Avenue, the south by Addison Street, the east by the Chicago River, and the west by the Milwaukee Road. Crime rates are 20% lower than other Chicago neighborhoods, and the general location is filled with young singles as well as young families. Many of the back roads are quiet and peaceful, filled with all sorts of flowers during the spring and summer.

The best part about this area is its location in between two of the trains, the red line and the brown line. It is far enough north that the trains aren't packed in the mornings but not so far north that it takes over an hour to reach downtown (even on the busier mornings). Rent here is 17% lower than the rest of the city, making it ideal for the younger crowd still unestablished at work. There are plenty of grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping areas within a small area, so walking is the preferred method of travel by residents in Irving Park.

Unfortunately, Irving Park lacks any big attractions and high end shopping. Because the general area is cheaper to live in, the main roads and sidewalks are dirty and noisy while all of the nice homes are blocks away. If you want to reach any of the touristy areas of Chicago, you have to take a train or bus downtown, so riding the transit system becomes tedious and boring very quickly. Owning a home here is also very expensive. At a median of $349,400, Irving Park is 29% higher than the Chicago average. It is also a good distance from the lake, so if you plan on having a beach day, it takes planning and travel. Read Less
