All You Want in is Here in Chicago's Albany Park User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) Albany Park, a unique neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago, Illinois, has been my home for over ten years. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods that sometimes blend into one another. I have lived in Albany Park for long enough to know that it's one of Chicago's best kept ...Read More secrets. It's on the northwest side but feels centrally located. It's ethnically diverse and vibrant. You can get a great deal on an apartment and parking space.

You can get in and out of Albany Park easily. The westernmost border is the Edens Expressway, which I use to get to work. My wife rides the train to the loop, from the station at Kimball. We like to bike along the North Channel Bike Trail up to Lincoln Square because it's pretty empty, especially at night. It's safe, just not a lot of other cyclists and pedestrians and dog-walkers, unlike the lakefront trail, which is busy all the time. Keep in mind that some parts aren't well-lit.

Housing can be expensive, but you can get a nice, sunny, refurbished 2 bedroom apartment with parking for about $1,100/month. Go closer to Foster Avenue, the northern border, for better deals. For closer access to the brown and blue L lines, go a little further south toward Montrose (the southern border). Lawrence curves around to create the eastern border.

Northeastern Illinois University is a great resource for classes and (often free) events. There is a highly rated high school, Von Stueben, which emphasizes science and math. One amenity the whole neighborhood is desperate for is the new library. The city closed the branch in 2012, with a reopening planned for fall 2014.

Albany Park has fantastic restaurants and bars, with an emphasis on neighborhood-type bars. I relocated to Albany Park from a less diverse neighborhood. We find the mix of people here interesting and welcoming. Try Chicago Kalbi for the best Korean BBQ, or try one of the Middle Eastern bakeries (especially Nazareth Sweets, at Kedzie and Eastwood). Have terrific sushi at Lawrence Fish Market without a fancy atmosphere. My wife and I like bars where you can chat with your neighbor about the Cubs. Albany Park is full of these. For groceries and household goods, you have the standard big chains nearby, but we love Andy's Fruit Ranch, an ethnic/gourmet grocery store. Read Less
