5 Short Years In Champaign, IL 4 rating By Anonymous ( Jan 13, 2015) I lived in Champaign, IL for five years, and I loved it because of its college town feel. The city itself is a town that has built up around the largest university in the state of Illinois. The University of Illinois blankets the town in beautiful buildings and college students, ...Read More but the town is also filled with people who have a massive amount of pride in the town. I feel pride in this town, and I only lived there for a few years.

The city is filled with many beautiful little shops that have been started by students at U of I or people who have lived in the town their whole lives. The enrollment at the university is large, but the people who live in town provide you with a wonderful small town feeling that you cannot get in other college towns.

The city is also filled with aspiring chefs and shop owners. You can go into some of the most beautiful little coffeehouses in the world, and there are restaurants that are the startups of chefs who are looking to make their big break. You can eat and drink your fill in this town easily, but the eating is almost always upscale. When the eating is not, the food is down home the way people like it.

You can find your favorite bar at night, and you will be able to belly up any time you want. You can make a life for yourself in this town even if you are not in college, but you will be surrounded by thousands of college kids who chose the college because of the city of Champaign. Read Less
Decent place, not what it used to be 2.5 rating By thorx9 ( Oct 03, 2013) Small town that is rapidly growing but not in a good way. A lot of displaced citizens are coming down from Chicago and the incidence of violent crimes is growing and becoming more outrageous all the time. And that is not a racial comment, but rather based upon economics. The c ...Read More ity also does not keep up the infrastructure to match the growth rate. Roads are a mess, there is a lot of traffic congestion and it's only a city of 80,000 people. Crime continues to become more prevalent but nothing gets done. This fall there were multiple robberies at gun point (I believe there were 6) and bank robberies are becoming weekly occurrences. If I were a high ranking official, I would be calling in UI Police, Urbana Police, Champaign Police, County Sheriff and State Police and get the animals under control.

If you think I'm exaggerating, a former co-worker was beaten and died from his injuries, another was jumped at a local bar and beaten and our local weatherman was beaten. No joke.

There a lot of offerings for a small town, but traffic and safety are a huge concern. I've lived here all my life and can't take it anymore. I've already rented a new place out of state. Read Less
There are lots of regions to Champaign. 3 rating By mmadams2 ( Feb 10, 2013) Depending on what area of Champaign you're talking about- everything can vary. There is everything from the ghetto on most of Bradley Avenue to the rich subdivisions like Cherry Hills and Ironwood. Southwest Champaign tends to be the higher class area. There are little neighborho ...Read More ods (good and bad) nestled throughout Champaign. Downtown prospect avenue (North Champaign) has a lot of places to shop- including the mall and many other stores- and LOTS of places to eat- it is constantly growing and changing. This part of town can become congested on weekends and after work. Downtown Neil street area (near Neil & Main St) has a nice casual bar scene- lots of bars within walking distance of eachother. Campustown is very very very congested traffic during the school year- avoid at all costs or take the back way- driving down Green street is a nightmare when the students are in town- parking is also difficult. Campus is pretty dead when students are not in town. Housing is pretty affordable in Champaign but just have to be careful which neighborhood you choose because crime can be high in some areas- also some areas are not safe for walking alone- especially at night. Schools are not great, if looking for a good education- might try a small town nearby Champaign or a private school. Read Less
Feel Like a College Student Again in Champaign, Illinois! 4 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 05, 2010) In August of 2010 I traveled to Champaign, Illinois to help my nephew move his belongings into his dormitory room at the University of Illinois. The city was bustling with activity as there was a host of parents moving their children into campus housing and apartments. Other than ...Read More the terrible traffic, Champaign was a fantastic place to visit.

Champaign is host to a wide variety of familiar hotels and chain restaurants. We enjoyed our stay at The Hilton Garden Inn, which is conveniently located two blocks from The University of Illinois Memorial Stadium. After a hard day of moving furniture, we enjoyed a tasty dinner at Jim Gould Restaurant. The service at Jim Gould was a bit slow due to the large crowd at the restaurant. However, the quality of food was excellent and we will definitely visit the restaurant again during our next visit to Champaign. We also hope to attend a University of Illinois basketball game next time we visit. We had after dinner drinks at the Cowboy Monkey bar, which made us feel like we were in college all over again! Visitors to Champaign will find that there is a plethora of restaurants and bars, many of which employ the local college students.

As you can see by my reveiew, Champaign is a fun city to visit, particularly during the start of the college semester. Just make sure to allow plenty of time to cope with the traffic! Read Less
