Great Friendly Family area 4 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 03, 2019) Our family visited last spring. We were impressed with the friendly people, the lovely resacas around the city, and the weather. My husband and I went for morning walks around the area where we were staying. We encountered friendly waves from dozens of people along our way, ev ...Read More en though we were obviously newcomers. My husband was born in Brownsville, nearly 70 years ago, but moved away when he was 12. I am native Californian. We were so impressed with the affordability and welcoming of this city, that we will be moving there soon. We can't speak to the nightlife because we are stay-at-home type, so I really don't care what's available in that area...or not. Just loved seeing this city and proximity to the beach. Will be calling Brownsville home, soon! Read Less
A city full of culture to enjoy 4.5 rating By Reviews ( Sep 03, 2014) The past review was pretty generic and extremely narrowed down to one point of view if you ask me.
Brownsville is a city in Texas where it is always sunny and beautiful yes there is a lot of Mexican people because it is a border town and because of the mexican people it has beco
...Read More me the culture rich city that it is... If you visit during February brownsville hosts a charro days parade charro days is a day they celebrate the mixing of mexican and american people in one city because of it being a border town and they throw a huge festival and parade downtown full of people dressed in folkloric bright dresses to symbolize mexican culture in america. but it also is home to many americans there is poor rich and VERY rich people just like any other cities . But aside from that it has many restaurants to offer not just Mexican. There is a wonderful zoo to visit( not many small cities have zoos) You can visit the university of Texas at brownsville and you can even drive 15 min to south padre island ( rated top 5 spring break destinations) where there is a schlitterbahn water park and a TON of 5 star resorts and a gorgeous beach snorkeling fishing etc wonderful area to visit with kids and family . And YES EVERYONE SPEAKS ENGLISH i lived there for 20 years and never had a problem with language brownsville is not huge on nightlife because since a lot of the population is considered lower class not many people spend on that but they still offer a lot of bars a few night clubs and live music and coffee shops they also have a beautiful art museum right next to the zoo and a lot more. Overall a good place to visit. So yeah, brownsville can be called " a city to avoid " in the eyes of someone who was there for 2 weeks ( for work ) like the person that rated it before me but it's a city that has a lot to offer for a small city and deserves a lot more credit than that. Brownsville, Texas - A City to Avoid 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 07, 2010) I was in Brownsville, Texas for two weeks in January 2010 for work. I found it to be an unpleasant city with little to offer visitors or residents.

Matamoros, Mexico is a main attraction around Brownsville, but the border region of Mexico is a very dangerous place for American tourists at this time and it isn't advised to travel across the border. However, there are some great Mexican restaurants in Brownsville, and most of the major retail stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy are available. Most of the people in Brownsville seemed friendly, but the drug trade and poverty are prevalent and this can be a dangerous place for tourists and visitors. I wouldn't advise choosing this as a vacation destination. Read Less

Compare Brownsville, TX Livability

      vs

      Brownsville, TX

Brownsville is a city in southwest Texas known for its subtropical climate, diverse economy and strong Hispanic culture. It is right on the border between the United States and Mexico, and the culture is very unique because of this. The beautiful weather and scenery alone makes the area worth visiting.

Brownsville's largest employers are currently the school district, local government and Walmart, among others. The overall economy is very diverse, with many different sectors growing in the area over the years. One particularly well developing sector is aerospace manufacturing, which has seen a similar growth throughout much of Texas. The city has the potential to support almost any worker.

For those wishing to relocate or start a family, Brownsville has a good local public school system and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is located here. Local parks such as the Ernesto Gamez Cascade Park and the Port of Brownsville are great for children and adults alike. There are also museums such as the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts and shoppers can find everything they need in local shopping centers like the Sunrise Mall and Palm Village Shopping Center. Most people won't have any problem finding something interesting to do here on any given day.

Public transportation is available in Brownsville in the form of a busing system, however most residents travel by car. Gas prices are relatively cheap, which makes owning a car even more enticing. Biking is also a possibility in many areas, although the city isn't particularly well known for it. Transportation is not as large of an expense here as it is in other similarly sized cities.

The total cost of living in Brownsville is very low for a city of its size, with the average rent costing only around $800 per month. This has increased over the past few years, but not by much more than what would be expected. Groceries and other necessities are also cheap because of the number of supermarkets in the area. The minimum wage is somewhat low compared to other cities, but even low-paid workers don't have as much trouble here as they would in larger cities. Most people will find no trouble living comfortably and happily if they decide to move here.

Brownsville is a developing community with a constantly growing economy and culture. The Hispanic influence on the area makes it unique and interesting compared to other parts of the United States. It has seen a boom in population in the past few years and that shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Anyone interested in beautiful weather, friendly locals and excellent economic opportunities would feel at home in Brownsville in no time at all.
