Impressions from a Yankee: Nice college vibe, lovely little town. A block or two off the main drag the downtown disappears. Big box stores are pushed a few miles south to the next burg where the working folks live. Friendly people, safe and clean community, tiny farmers market. N ...Read More
o Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, but newish Kroger has the basics. Real estate options limited and on the high side of affordable. Nice campus.

Blacksburg, VA is a town that looks toward the mountains. I moved here five years ago because of a job. There are some things I like about the area as well as some things that I would change. I'll start with the negative aspects.

e are too many homes and businesses together. They are right on top of each other, and I come from a town in Maine that didn't have homes like that. Another thing that I don't like about the area is the weather. In the spring and summer, it's not that bad, but the area does see quite a bit of snow in the winter.
Even though there are some negative things about Blacksburg, there are some positive points as well. If you're looking for work, you won't be disappointed. There are several businesses and small stores that are usually hiring. Lane Stadium is one of the best places I've been to for watching a baseball game. One of the places to visit if you like history is Smithfield Plantation. You get to take a step back in time to see how people in the colonial era lived. There are houses on the plantation that you can walk through and demonstrations of making foods and clothing. The Alexander Black House is another historical place to visit if you want a little background on the city. It has recently been restored, but there are some of the original artifacts and furniture left of the home. The New River Junction is also a place to check out if you like being outside and taking a plunge by going rafting.
