Bessemer, Alabama: What's Good, Bad and Getting Better 3 rating By Anonymous ( May 14, 2018) I find there are some good and bad points about living in Bessemer, Alabama. For a small town, Bessemer is really an industrial suburb of Birmingham. It was part of the old Alabama steel industry and has the look and feel of an old factory town, but when the steel companies moved ...Read More out unemployment rose and continues to be a problem.

Along with unemployment, the crime rate has risen in Bessemer. Considering the fairly small population, I think the crime rate here is well above the rest of Alabama, but I know the City Council is working to make things better by inviting more business and jobs into the city.

On the positive side, I find the cost of living in Bessemer to be well within my budget. The weather is also a plus with mild winters, although the summers are warm and humid. Nightlife is a bit limited in Bessemer, and there are only a half dozen or so places to eat, but Birmingham with its restaurants and attractions is just a 20-minute drive away. Read Less
