Why do you want to be a nurse?

My chest is tight, my body is shaking with fear. I am yelling “it’s okay Ryan, you’re going to be okay” I call 911 as I try to reassure my big brother. I sit with him in the ambulance as he is rushed to the hospital. This is not my first ambulance ride accompanying him to the emergency room - his medical routines and emergencies had become my own. But this was the first time my parents weren’t home, and now I was in charge.Ryan battled with epilepsy his whole life. And when I was a freshman in high school he died suddenly from a seizure. My heart broke. But this is not a story to make anyone feel bad for me. This story is about how my brother’s life pushed me to be my best self, and how his illness helped define my future.Ryan had to be in the hospital a lot, and because I was much younger I was there a lot too. At one-point Ryan was in the Intensive Care Unit for two months. It was during that stay that I resolved to pursue a career as a nurse. I was impacted by his nurses’ genuine commitment to helping him heal. Watching them in the hospital with my brother made me feel safe and hopeful, and I wanted to be that person for others in the future.I have focused on preparing myself to be a nurse. We are fortunate to have a full year block period Health Science and Career course at my high school. There I practiced taking my classmates vital signs. I learned how to feed patients, change an occupied bed, facilitate range of motion exercises, and wash and dress a patient. I spent four weeks shadowing nurses at Overlake Hospital, where I saw my first childbirth and helped on the cardiac and medical-surgical floors. Experiencing all this further cemented my passion for nursing.I volunteer at a local nursing home. This work makes me reflect on what kind of nurse I want to be. Mickey, a patient I came to love had late stage Alzheimer’s but somehow managed to be happy and loving through her constant confusion. Each week it was my goal to get her walking and put a smile on her face. Any way I could help ease her days also made my days brighter - this is what I am meant to do.The loss of my brother did not deter me from my passion - it propelled me forward.Every day I work hard in school. I have a part-time job and do as much volunteer healthcare work as I can. I have come to have a balanced life with purpose. I am very excited to pursue my goal of being an ICU nurse. The last three years of my life have shaped me into someone that will thrive as a nurse. I am proud of myself and I know Ryan is too.
