Alexandria seems to have most ingredients that would make a city great- but it has yet to realize its potential, as is shown in the stagnant population since 1980. Reasons for this may include a rather isolated location within the state, and a lack of major employers other than ...Read More
the same ones they'be had for decades. Recreation opportunities are limitless here, it is 2 hours from virtually anywhere you choose in this state, there is very little traffic (although some of the road systems/conditions are archaic), plenty of restaurants to choose from. The area is also quite beautiful- with bayou, swamps, rolling pine covered hills- a total variety of landscapes, in my opinion the most scenic of all Louisiana cities. Really not much night life here, other than at said restaurant bars. The crime rate is way over the US average, but most of it is confined to a few certain neighborhoods- so you really don't notice it. I personally haven't been a victim of any crime in 5 years here. Probably not the kid-friendliest place, as the area lacks a water park as well as a skating park. Also not good for single people- most here are married, or they grow up here and move elsewhere. Also a very locals feel to the place- if you're from outside the area, don't expect to make friends very quickly. I'd recommend Alexandria to a person who is married or attached, has a job offer or established career/trade- especially in health care, law, or the timber industry. Otherwise if you're single and moving here with no employment offer or plan- good luck, it will likely be a jungle out there!

ng the population is only about 50,000. The city is beautiful and rife with green space and parks. As far as entertainment and things to do are concerned: the Alexandria Zoological Park is a must see with lots of animals and great zookeepers.
One of my favorite restaurants in Alexandria is El Reparo Mexican Restaurant on Macarthur Dr. The food is always declious and is prepared in a way that would even make Mexicans proud. It is also very affordable and the portions are huge. They've done some remodeling over the last couple years, which looks great! Robbie G's Restaurants is also worth visiting. They serve fresh seafood, there is a variety of options on the menu and everything is tasty. The beer is always ice cold and the peanuts keep you thirsty. Just toss the shells on the floor, I do!
