Awesome Place To Visit

Me coming to Ponca city a few times a year since June 2020, has been a blast for me. I love the people there, they are much more kind than where I live near Dallas, TX. In the summer, it is special, when it is the right time of the day to visit, I go to Sun N' fun, it is awesome ...Read More
to go to the Lazy river, and the actual pool. It is also nearby Kansas, to where if you are visiting this community. It is not perfect, like it is a little too secluded that you would have to make an 86 mile drive to Wichita Kansas via Kansas Turnpike, or a 92.5 mile drive to Tulsa Oklahoma via the Cimarron Turnpike, or the ONLY free route to Oklahoma City which is a 106 Mile drive via I- 35. It does not bother me, since I like long drives, but it does bother some people. The night life is actually pretty decent for a town like this, due to their oil factory, although there is not much n nightlife other than that, does not bother me, but it may bother some people. If you get the chance to visit, make every effort to do so regardless of its flaws, trust me you will love it.

Great Place to Retire

Moved to Ponca City to retire after living in Los Angeles and Houston the last 13 years. Ponca’s location to Stillwater (OSU), OKC, Tulsa and Wichita makes it easy to shop or visit larger cities when you desire. The city is run well with great services (roads are 150% bette ...Read More
r than any place I’ve lived). There are numerous parks, two golf courses, five museums and city wide Free WiFi (although it could be better). Three different walking trails in the city and a mountain bike trail at the lake. There is a nice city lake and two nice fishing lakes 20 minutes away.
People who complain about crime need to live were there is real crime. Ponca’s crime rate as mentioned is odd, because I haven’t see it in the 12+ years we have lived here (here gone then back). If anything is apparent it’s that people do report stuff because they expect something to happen while in some cities people don’t even bother reporting crimes because they know it’s a waste of time.
Housing can be an issue if you don’t have a lot of money to spend or if you’re in that middle range market where there are a lot of people competing for the same house. We also find the houses are seldom updated, people tend to buy and live in their homes without updating.
Retail shopping can be an issue, however with the Internet we can buy anything.
The hospital is small but effective. There is life flight ($68 a year) that will transport you in an emergency, with over 12 hospitals within an hour 1/2 drive (20 minutes flight).
I struggle writing this because many people tell me they don’t want people moving here because they like the small town they have and are concerned people moving here will bring outside issues.

I have lived here for 10 years. It has rapidly gone downhill in the last decade. I am scared to go to many places. There is a gas station or Dollar General that gets robbed here on a daily basis, there are stabbings and murders about once a week, and the police & newspaper work ...Read More
in cahoots to try to hid all they can from the community. I have my way of finding out about it though, so I know a lot more than the average naive citizen living in denial. The schools are a joke. Kids can tell other kids they are going to kill them with no consequences. The kids are disgusting (products of the adults), rude, and have no parental discipline at home. They are on lock down all the time from criminals running around, there was a man showing his genitals to the kids at recess, and a husband holding a knife to his wife's throat in the parking lot as school was starting. I have been a victim of theft 4 times in the last 10 years. I am terrified that something horrible is going to happen to my family before I have the chance to leave this disgusting town. Do yourself a favor & don't move here!!!!

If you're a redneck who plans to stay put and wants a few stable grocery stores and possibly clean restaurants, but doesn't care about the quality of those restaurants, or about nightlife, or attractions, or the amenities of a larger town, this place may be for you.

onca City for nearly 4 years, moving there from the Chicago area. It was a big leap for us, and there were some good parts and some bad.
It's hard to make really deep friendships as most people have their own friends they've probably known their entire lives, but if you're fortunate to actually find friends, they'll be willing to bend over backwards for you. The community, in general, is good.
The area is also quite beautiful, with two lakes nearby and the rolling ranch land of north central Oklahoma spreading every direction for miles.
You're also equidistant from Wichita, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, at about 2 hours to each of those. If you really fancy some fancy food or events, you'll have to make the drive, and it isn't super easy, especially in the bitter winter storms.
We enjoyed out time there, in general, but were glad to move on after a few years.
