Compare Newmarket, ON Livability
Newmarket, ON
The regional seat of Ontario’s Regional Municipality of York, Newmarket sits midway between Toronto and Barrie and is known as a commuter city. But it also has a strong economy of its own; predominately in business services, administration and knowledge industries. In the past, Newmarket was a mill town, though it starting to grow in the 19th century and continues to grow today. It is also the headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police "O" Division and the York Regional Police.
Newmarket is often ranked as one of the top 10 cities to live in in all of Canada. It has also been pegged as one of its romantic cities. Part of this is due to its picturesque Main Street Heritage Conservation District, which today is the social and cultural hub of the city. Any Newmarket resident will say that walking around this area is a must. Mains Street is also one of the trendiest areas for dining, although might not be the best area to live if you are looking for some peace and quiet. That is saved for neighbourhoods in the western half of the city.
Families flock to Newmarket due to its new developments, good selection of schools and lovey parks. It is also substantially cheaper than living in other cities around the GTA, but provides great transportation to and from Toronto. This is why it is popular amongst commuters. It also has its own transportation, with buses travelling along main routes throughout the city. Another reason it is a great place to live is its numerous recreational activities. Newmarket has some fantastic golf courses, public swimming pools and ice rinks, as well as the Nokiidaa Trail System, which is great for hiking and cycling.
Diversity is growing in the city, with less than 80 percent of residents using English as their mother tongue. Newmarket residents also have a good quality of life, as the average income is much higher than it is province wide, though housing costs are lower than in many other cities in Southern Ontario. It is also great in terms of things to see and do, especially considering its fantastic heritage buildings, many of which are designated heritage sites. Also worth exploring is the Upper Canada Mall, the Newmarket Farmers’ Market and The Newmarket Theatre.
