I have lived in Duncan for two years and have lived in other similar sized communities of around 25,000 people in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. I do not come at this from a point of view of a city dweller and have tried my very best to integrate with the community. Comparat ...Read More
ive to the other places of similar size that I have lived, I find Duncan extremely lacking in amenities, dining, and shopping. Much of the data collected by this website is inaccurate and improperly marked. There are only 3 grocery stores, there are 3 gyms, there are only maybe 7 of the 20 listed restaurants that are genuine sit down buildings, most restaurants are fast food of some variety.
I will note some positives before I list what I think Duncan lacks as it would be unfair to not acknowledge the good sides. The highlights of town include the Simmons Center, the Chisholm Trail Museum, the Cameron University extension, and the library. These are all well run and beautiful. The western side of town is well maintained and attractive. The Simmons Center is the most reasonably priced recreation center I have ever been a member of and has a wonderful myriad of perks and nearly unlimited classes with fantastic teachers. I have heard tell that school system is pretty good. If you like golf, there's a great golf course. Nearby fishing is great.
The negatives: The downtown has been completely neglected and it seems like there are little incentives for small shops to thrive in most of the shopping areas. It is truly sad the level of disrepair and vacant shop spaces, seeming that the community as a whole has not got a strong downtown or economic development corporation. Nearby Marlowe, a town that is 1/4th the size of Duncan has an absolutely beautiful downtown that clearly has been invested in. There are very few events for the whole community of Duncan put on by the city. Of the very little that do occur, they are rarely marketed online, depending on word of mouth to members within churches, etc. Because so little is put on and open to the general public, it is extraordinarily difficult to integrate into this town if you are not someone that attends church.
There is a vast class divide that has left one side of Duncan completely destitute and isolated. It seems there has been little community or city government action to improve this situation. There are almost no sidewalks in town forcing commuting to get almost anywhere. The only parks that are genuinely meant to have a walking paths are Whisenant and Centennial Park, all other parks are meant to be green spaces but hardly meant to be enjoyed for exercise. Centennial Park and the Kiddieland Park are the only good playgrounds. The city water is extremely concerning having spent over 5 years with concerning levels of trihalomethanes making it concerning to drink tap water anywhere in town. I am hoping and rooting for Duncan to improve but as far as I'm concerned it has a ways to go.

I love living in Duncan! My favorite part about living in Duncan is the weather, it rarely snows and the sun is shinning for more than half of the year. The second best characteristic is the beautiful and colorful crepe myrtle trees, Duncan is known as the crepe myrtle capital of ...Read More
Oklahoma. My family enjoy Duncan as well. My wife especially loves the museum on the Chisholm Trail and it's massive public library located near highway 81. One of my children even attends the Cameron University extension in Duncan. There's also a vocational center where my son received his associates degree.
Another good thing is that the property value and living expenses in Duncan is reasonably priced. The community is also a decent size and it has a good mix of people from all different classes. However, one downside to the town are its demographics. The town is ninety percent caucasian which requires us to travel to experience people from different cultures.
