Aurora, ON
One of the wealthiest cities in Canada, Aurora is located just north of Toronto and is considered to be part of the Greater Toronto Area. In terms of population, Aurora could be considered a medium-sized city, with a population of just over 55,000 people. In the past, Aurora was just a small community around the intersection of Yonge Street and Wellington Street East, which today is considered to by its downtown area. The city started to expand well beyond this community to make it what it is today.
Aurora is a lovely city with a small town feeling. It has some excellent schools, shopping facilities and restaurants and is fast becoming a trendy place to live within the GTA. It is not a cheap city, but it has many perks, including its historic downtown area. It is also where the Go train station is located, linking the city south to Toronto and north to Barrie. Aurora’s main shopping zone is also situated here.
Aurora is rated as one of the best cities in the country to live in, especially for families. This is due to its great schools, facilities and laid-back lifestyle. One thing to consider is that although rentals are affordable in the city, buying something is not. In fact, the average annual household income in Aurora is around $100,000. This also means that crime is low and quality of life is quite high. Another great thing about Aurora is that it is fairly quiet; meaning it is not a city for singles, but rather one for couples or families that want a calmer, slower paced lifestyle.
Most Aurora residents rely on their own car to get around the city. There is public transportation, but it is not great, so a car is needed to run errands. Although some areas of the city make for some great walking, like The Aurora Promenade (Downtown Aurora). Walking around this area is the best way to enjoy the historic part of Aurora and to visit places like the historic Aurora Train Station, the Aurora Cultural Centre and Hillary House, which is one of the country’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture.
