Yonkers, NY is a Little Taste of Manhattan User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Dec 19, 2011) I grew up in Yonkers and spent most of my teenage years there. I loved living there and go back to visit often. I love the hustle and bustle of Yonkers, and it comes without the expense of Manhattan. Plus, Yonkers is so close to New York City that it's easy to get there in just a ...Read More quick 30 minutes. Yonkers has a little bit of everything, from entertainment for all ages and plenty of kid-friendly activities to high-quality shopping and an assortment of colleges to choose from. Yonkers may get a bad rap from people who aren't from New York because it's so close to the city, but in reality, Yonkers is full of some of the most down-to-earth, kind people you can find. Plus there are tons of dining options to choose from, whether you want to go out for a nice dinner with a big group of friends or order Indian or Thai food for delivery.

It's not very easy to get bored in Yonkers, especially since a lot of the places you'll go are in walking distance. Much like Manhattan, Yonkers rarely goes to sleep and there's always something going on somewhere. In the summertime, there are plenty of beaches that are easy to get to and in the winter you're not far from the mountains of upstate New York.

Yonkers does have a few drawbacks, though. There are a few bad places that you wouldn't want to wander into unknowingly, and it's important that you know where these areas of Yonkers are so that you don't get lost and in trouble. Yonkers can also be a bit expensive in comparison with other parts of the country, but it's not more expensive than most big cities. The benefits of living in Yonkers greatly outweigh the drawbacks, though. Read Less
Yonkers, NY - Stop and Enjoy the Scenery User Rating 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 05, 2010) I have visited Yonkers, NY on numerous occasions. I live north of Yonkers, and I regularly stop to explore this city while I take the train ride towards New York City. In fact, Yonkers has four train stations along the Metro North Hudson Line, which leads directly to NYC's Grand ...Read More Central Terminal. The train ride from Yonkers to midtown Manhattan is only about 30 minutes.

I get off at the Glenwood station, which is within walking distance from the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers. I enjoy the museum's collection of fine art, particularly the paintings from renowned painters of the Hudson River School 19th century era. Then I head to the waterfront John F. Kennedy Marina Picnic, a park that's right behind the museum. I enjoy the scenic views of the Hudson River and New Jersey's Palisades Cliffs, located across the river. Yonkers is very densely populated, with a mix of single family homes, apartments, and multi-family housing. There is little space between many of the homes, even in the most isolated and quiet neighborhoods. The city is clearly dominated by an urban character.

Currently, Yonkers is undergoing a major revitalization project in the downtown area, and I can't wait to revisit this city and explore the new restaurants, businesses, and shops. I also heard of plans about a renovated waterfront promenade. Read Less
