An Unfortunate Town 0.5 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 13, 2018) Wadesboro is a former textile town straddling highway 74 in Anson County. While it had a certain charm back in the 1960s, as the textile mills began to close down, the residents ( 70% black) were left with little to do and no alternatives. It is the type of town where there i ...Read More s a church on every corner, yet they think all the town needs is more prayer as opposed to taking any constructive actions. When I graduated in 1979 we had the lowest SAT scores in the state and that trend continues. Now we also have some of the worst crime in the state, meth labs, prostitution, high teen pregnancy rate and high STD rate. The county hospital closed years ago. There is only one " restaurant" in town other than the numerous fast food joints crowding the highway. Racism, homophobia and Xenophobia are rampant. The arts council is a joke. Parts of Wadesboro were used for the filming of " The Color Purple" and many of the residents were called upon as extras to play bigots who shouted at Sophia as she lay on the street. That wasn't by accident. That was simply typecasting. The only shopping is Walmart or Dollar General. Majority Baptist, who drive to the next county to buy liquor so they won't be seen by other Baptists. A sad modernity for what could have been a charming village. Read Less
