I have lived in Towson, Maryland for almost 25 years. It is the seat of Baltimore County. Filled with historical buildings dating back to the 17th century, Towson is a bustling town of commercial, recreational and government businesses surrounded by sprawling countryside. The hea ...Read More
rt of Towson is where all of the legislation for the county takes place. Therefore, everything centers around the courthouse. Office buildings once solely full of legal professionals and government personnel, Towson has become the heart of the county.
York Road is the main thoroughfare lined with quaint shops, unique bars and restaurants and family-owned service shops. Just off of the main drag is Towson Town Center, a four-story mall anchored by Nordstrom and Macy's. A luxury wing was added in a few years ago that offers stores such as Burberry and Tiffany & Co. A large development project is in the works to bring back a hometown feel to Towson. As Towson has grown, traffic and population have taken a toll on businesses as York Road is usually running at a snail's pace with stop-and-go traffic. Developers hope to bring families back into Towson by offering amenities such as ample free parking, tree-lined walking paths, and easier access to the entertainment and recreational facilities planned. Cinemark has signed on as a tenant for a multi-use establishment. The company is building a 12-screen, state-of-the-art theater that will be joined be retail, restaurant, and office space.
Since I moved to the area, 25 colleges and universities have made this a college town. College lacrosse is the sport to play or watch on spring weekends. Therefore, there are many lacrosse-themed sports bars in the area. In addition, a music venue was opened in an old single screen movie theater to cater to the tastes of the student population. The Recher Theatre, once host to many local favorites, now attracts national acts throughout the week.
