New to Newark, OH User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 22, 2012) I just relocated from Ohio State University to Newark, Ohio. Newark is just 33 miles away from Columbus, which is great because I love Columbus, but the more time I spend in Newark, the less affection I feel for Columbus. Newark is truly a great city and it has really grown on me ...Read More .

The first thing I noticed is Newark is nowhere near as hectic as Columbus, but I like that! The second thing I realized was the beautiful, and at times unique, architecture. If you come to Newark you must see the Licking County Courthouse. I told my fiance that it looks like something straight out of a Jane Austen novel. It is a very old, pristine, beautiful building. Another piece of architecture you must see is the basket making plant of the Longaberger Corporation. You can't miss it, because it is a giant basket! It is an amazing site to see. When talking about amazing sites, you can't forget to add the Newark Earthworks to the list. The Newark Earthworks are giant burial mounds that were created by the Hopewell Indians. Truthfully, I didn't even know they existed, but I am glad I do now; they are spectacular. There is also a decent mall less than a mile away from the mounds called, appropriately enough, Indian Mound Mall. Lastly, and I am saving the best for last, if you are even near Newark, OH, you need to stop at Velvet Ice Cream. Velvet Ice Cream, or Ye Olde Mill as us locals call it, serves some of the best homemade ice cream you will ever eat. There is also a restaurant, gift shop, museum, and picnic grounds on location, so you can make a day of the trip!

I would recommend living in Newark to anyone: a just married couple, a bachelor, a family with kids. There is a lot to do, a lot to see, and most importantly, the people are great. I am proud to call Newark my home.
