Wonderful Woodside, NYC User Rating 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) I lived in the Woodside area of Queens for a good portion of my twenties. I lived right next to an Irish pub, one of many in the area. The neighborhood is historically Irish, and though the Irish population has become more and more sparse in recent years, the Irish tradition in t ...Read More he neighborhood lives on. However, even with the lapse in Irish Americans that are represented here, the population has been diversifying rapidly. Woodside has become one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the New York area. The mix of nationalities includes a great number of Filipinos, Italians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Indians, Dominicans, Colombians, and Thais. Large communities of these nationalities and more have begun to spring up throughout the boundary lines of Woodside. However, while strong individual communities have developed, for the most part, all groups are friendly with another.

Businesses of many different nationalities are prominent in the area. The best part of this diversity is the various different restaurant and food styles that are available. It was not uncommon for me to pop in for a Colombian breakfast, followed by a lunch of Indian food and finish my day off right with a plate of Thai.

The vibes of the neighborhood change depending on which area of the establishment you are centered in. Though much of the area is simply quiet streets, lined with homesteads, you can participate in a fair amount of decent nightlife the closer you get to Roosevelt Avenue. Roosevelt Avenue provides the vast majority of the commercialism in the neighborhood. There are plenty of good bars, restaurants, and unique places to hang out and party.

One of the reasons the area has become so popular and diverse is because of one universal draw--something that everyone desires--safety. All of the neighborhood is covered by the 108th precinct. This precinct is known for having very low crime rates: some of the lowest is the city. This makes it a great location for those who can't afford to live in Manhattan, but still want the big city vibe and city feel while offering a more family friendly atmosphere. Woodside has cultivated an atmosphere that makes this wish a reality.

The one major downside of the neighborhood is currently the huge influx of people. The neighborhood is becoming more and more crowded by the day. Read Less
