Why I Live in Woodhaven-Richmond Hill New York User Rating 3 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 06, 2012) I have lived in the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill neighborhood of New York for the past 5 years. A small section of the Queens neighborhood, it is located just 5 blocks east of Brooklyn, New York. It has a plethora of restaurants, parks and the regular health and living services of any ...Read More safe town in America. Of course, those towns are not a 20 minute subway ride from Manhattan, or a 15 minute walk from Brooklyn.

The best part about life in Woodhaven-Richmond Hill is the strong sense of community the local residents have. While there are a decent number of students and young professionals living in the area, most brownstone apartments or homes have families living in them. There are several parks in the area with playgrounds that are always busy, especially in the summer. This community feeling extends into the shopping and restaurant attractions in the area. Most restaurants are ethnic, family owned joints that have been around for decades. Mama Meena's is the best Filipino restaurant in all of New York, and Phil-Am foods is a relic of a golden age of hand-cured meats and cheeses.

Another plus of Woodhaven-Richmond Hill is its proximity to the youthful life of Brooklyn, and of course Manhattan. There are 2 subway stations within a 20 minute walk of the neighborhood, and the trains run 24 hours, not including construction delays.

Despite the area's family oriented feel, there are a few things that Woodhaven-Richmond Hill lacks compared to other New York neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the nightlife in the area is not exactly interesting. There are a few bars, but they are primarily drinking holes for union workers, not places to see or be seen. Also, the age of many buildings in the area is a turn off, as they have not been updated or even painted in many years. The weather in the area can also be hit and miss, as the urban location and buildings can trap heat during the summer and whip winter winds at residents during the winter.

Despite some of these shortcomings, Woodhaven-Richmond Hill, New York is a good place to live if you want a New York native community with proximity to the other boroughs. Read Less
