Endless days were spent wan ...Read More dering about and getting a feel for who were visitors and who were the regulars. If lucky, as a teen one could pick up some summer employment and make a few extra bucks.

What many do not realize is that this bustling summer community also has a great deal of activity during the remainder of the year. Far Rockaway is the primary neighborhood for the working class, and there is also a gated bungalow community found in Breezy Point. The real estate here is prime, while prices are fair considering location and the real live ocean at your front door.

Surfing is all the rage and not just for the west coasters. Rockaway beach regulars ave known about the great surfing conditions between 88th and 90th streets for years. The best part of NY City surf? It lasts year round making this the best spot in the country to fine tune abilities or take a lesson. Just be sure to dress accordingly when the temps dip in November and December.

If surfing and that scene are not quite what you are looking for, there are many sites, great shopping, hopping clubs and bars, and awesome eats! If wanting excitement there is the roller hockey rink. Strap on the skates and get some exercise while having fun! During the season cheer on the local team. One can also visit the Flight 587 memorial or take in some local art at the artist's bus shelter.

In terms of food, the Rockaways offers some of the best fare in the city. At the Beach Bagel one can enjoy some delectable whitefish and the best bagels around. If more in the mood for some sandwiches, try the 101 Deli. Their subs are to die for. their bread is made fresh, on site everyday. Ciro's Pizza offers delicious pies by the slice or whole pizza, and the atmosphere will help you relax and enjoy the local culture. For desert make sure to visit Ciro's Pastry shop for some delicious gelato and Italian pastries that are as good as if your mother made them.
