This area, is a dump; in its current format. It will require A LOT to gentrify. User Rating 0.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jul 05, 2020) I have had the misfortune; of residing in this neighborhood, for 10 years. I am currently near the East 149 Street and Third Avenue section. During all of my years, residing here; I can’t remember a time, when this was a decent neighborhood. There’s more trash, on the sidewal ...Read More ks & the street; than in the garbage bins. Drugs addicts permeate the entire neighborhood, extending all the way up through the Grand Concourse, going across the bridge into Harlem.

Anyone who romanticizes what this neighborhood is about; either

1. Stares at this neighborhood through Rose colored glasses

2. Grew up in much worse neighborhoods; and thinks that E. 149th Street & Third Avenue is an “upgrade”.

Either way; anyone who sees positives in this neighborhood, requires therapy.

The 2 biggest, “thriving” businesses in this area; are the Pawn Shop, near LINCOLN HOSPITAL, and the Methadone Clinic.

Investors spent money, to build the “Roberto Clemente” plaza, a few years ago. That has been taken over, by drug addicts, homeless squatters, drug dealers, etc.

The only thing, worth “protecting” is the Downtown 2/5 trains. And that’s because those trains, go express to Manhattan.

Another blight, on this neighborhood; are the BREAKING GROUND, low income Housing buildings. These buildings; attract dope fiends, and mental patients. And the worst performing building; is the BROOK. That’s despite the fact that before the pandemic; the mgmt was in-house, social workers are in-house, Maintenance worked 7 days per week, and the building has 24 hour security. A high number of tenants; still treat the building; like a trash bin.

I would recommend, to anyone; that you wait another 10 years BEFORE relocating to reside in this neighborhood. Wait for gentrification; to take full effect.

This neighborhood, DESPERATELY needs working class residents, with STANDARDS. Currently there are too many poor, destitute, jobless residents; with too much Free time on their hands.

Even as I write this; people have been shooting off firecrackers, for the last month. Today is July 4, 2020. Residents in this neighborhood; have been shooting firecrackers, since early June.

This is what happens; when you have too many derelicts, encased in one area. They thrive within chaos.

I look forward to the day; when I can relocate, and leave this neighborhood behind. Read Less
South Bronx, New York, NY: Neighborhood Review User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 05, 2012) I have been a native South Bronx resident for eight years, now and I love living here. I grew up in Brooklyn and moved to the South Bronx when I was in my early twenties. I love the rich history that the South Bronx has to offer. It is a tough neighborhood but I love the hispanic ...Read More culture and knowing this is the birthplace of Hip Hop and Salsa music. The Beaux Arts structure is a cultural landmark which is just a few blocks away from my apartment. Orchard Beach is another attraction just minutes away and you can experience the wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean.

However, here is my problems with the South Bronx. It has a strong network of communities, cultural centers and restaurants but it is also a dangerous place to raise a family as there is a lot of street violence and domestic abuse. It is also rife with impoverished areas of living and there are definitely streets I do not walk down alone. I think South Bronx is beautiful and I have learned to love living here but it is not for everyone, and I think that is one of the main reasons why South Bronx has gained a reputation for being a tough and hard place to live in. However, it is one of the most diverse boroughs in New York. It features many ethnicities, religions, and classes of people from all over the world. I love waking up and talking a walk down my block because it feels like a real melting pot, which is what makes American such a special place to live in. And living in South Bronx you can feel the love and diversity of what this borough has to offer. Read Less
