Among the Best in the Best of the Boroughs User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 06, 2014) I lived in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, for four years (2009-2013) specifically the Prospect Lefferts Garden section. North to south, it stretches from Empire Boulevard to Clarkson Avenue and Linden Boulevard; east to west, it runs from New York and Rogers Ave ...Read More nues to Ocean Avenue. Subway service is available at the Parkside Avenue (Q), Prospect Park (B/Q/S) and Winthrop and Sterling Street (2/5) stations; many bus lines also run through the neighborhood, notably the B12, B41 and B49. It was in the process of gentrification while I lived there, with a number of Caribbean Islands folks (mostly Haitian and Dominican, but also many from Trinidad and Tobago) living long in the area and college kids and hipsters beginning to move into and set up shops amid the townhouses and apartment buildings that dominate the neighborhood. The eclectic mix of people made for a remarkably diverse environment, one I found personally enriching.

The food available was a particular joy. On the same block, and the same side of the street as my apartment were a take-out Chinese place (not good, but cheap), a Halal Indian restaurant (Gandhi, which was excellent and which I miss), a pizza place (unremarkable), a fried chicken place (never went, since I can't eat fried chicken anymore) and one place that rotated its offerings every few months. In easy walking distance were a gyro place, a jerk chicken place, a Jamaican bakery, a sushi bar (Sushi Tatsu III, solid and with good miso soup) and the usual gamut of franchise and chain restaurants. (McDonald's and Popeye's seemed to get the most business.) Many places delivered for no fee, which was nice; I routinely tipped 20 to 25%, and so I enjoyed remarkable quick service.

That does not mean that all was well, of course. Housing is not cheap, although it is more nearly reasonably priced than in Downtown Brooklyn or Manhattan. Many of the apartment buildings are in relatively poor repair, and crime can be a concern. In January 2013, for example, my apartment was broken into and vandalized. (That is not why I relocated to Oklahoma, though; that I did for a new job.) Driving is a hazard, particularly on Flatbush Avenue, and those who have apartments on the first floor of a building can expect to have conversations with passers-by, whether they want them or not. But those same talks can prove enlightening, as can simply paying attention to what happens in Prospect Lefferts Garden. It is well worth doing. Read Less
